Real Friends is an American pop punk band from Tinley Park, Illinois. [1] To date, the band has released seven EPs and three studio albums. Previously signed to Fearless Records, the band is currently signed to Pure Noise Records.

History

Formation and EPs (2010–13)

In the fall of 2010 bassist Kyle Fasel "wasn't happy" with the music he was working on and wished to start over. [2] Fasel called lead guitarist Dave Knox and the pair soon started talking about the goals they wished to achieve. [2] Fasel didn't expect it to lead anywhere. [2] Vocalist Dan Lambton, who was friends with Knox, received a call from Fasel, asking if he would like to join him and Knox. [2] They were soon joined by drummer Aaron Schuck. [3] The band recorded its debut EP, This Is Honesty, in the spring of 2011. Following the release of the EP, the band began playing shows around the Midwest. The group soon realized that it "didn't feel right [playing the songs they currently had]. [...] almost forc[ing] ourselves into [a] sound." [2] They had a meeting and came to the conclusion to start over. [2] During this period, Fasel and Knox were playing in The Fastest Kid Alive. [4] Shortly afterwards, Schuck was replaced by Brian Blake. [3] Blake had emailed the band after he found out they needed a drummer. [2]

Real Friends didn't have a permanent second guitarist, often having their friends to substitute. [2] Eric Haines soon joined as rhythm guitarist. [3] Until Haines joined, Fasel and Knox would typically write the songs, and, according to Fasel, they didn't have "another guitar[ist's] opinion". [2] Shortly after the release of the Everyone That Dragged You Here EP, the band's popularity and the audience at their shows increased. [2] The band later released the Put Yourself Back Together EP. [5] Reviewing the EP for Rock Sound , Andy Biddulph noted that he would not be "surprised" if the band was "mixing it with the big boys in a year's time". [6] In November, the group supported The Wonder Years on their UK shows, including UK Warped Tour. [7]

Maybe This Place Is the Same and We're Just Changing (2013–15)

Fearless signed the band in December 2013. [8] The band were initially hesitant to sign to a label, but called Fearless "different. They made it feel more like a family." [9] The group "still wanted full control of our band" while Fearless would help with marketing and distribution, according to Fasel. [10] The band recorded their debut studio album in February [11] [12] with producer Seth Henderson. [13] The band released their debut album, Maybe This Place Is the Same and We're Just Changing, on July 22, 2014. [14] The album sold over 10,300 copies, [15] charting at number 24 on the Billboard 200. [16] The band played on the 2014 Vans Warped Tour supporting the album's release, appearing on the Journey's Stage. They released an EP, More Acoustic Songs, for Record Store Day in April 2015, [17] [18] including an acoustic version of "Late Nights in My Car" featuring Kevin Jordan from This Wild Life. [19]

The Home Inside My Head (2015–2017)

Throughout 2015, the band made several references to recording a new album on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Fearless Records announced that a new Real Friends record would be released in 2016, through a tweet on December 22, 2015. [20] [ non-primary source needed ] Real Friends finished recording the album on the road in February 2016. [21] During their tour, the band played a new song entitled "Colder Quicker". On April 1, 2016, the band announced that the title of the new album was The Home Inside My Head , along with the album's release date, cover art, and track listing, as well as a music video for "Colder Quicker". [22] The album was released on May 27, 2016. [23]

Composure and departure of Dan Lambton (2017–2020)

On November 16, 2017, the band released a single entitled "Get By". [24] On June 18, 2018, during an RSVP Acoustic session, the band announced their next album, Composure , was set for release on July 13, 2018. [25] It was preceded two weeks prior by a single and accompanying music video entitled "From the Outside".

The band released an EP called Even More Acoustic Songs on digital platforms and on a limited 7" vinyl pressing.

In early 2020, the band deleted their previous posts on social media, causing many to believe they had broken up. Lambton denied these rumors. On February 14, 2020, the band released a statement saying they have parted ways with Lambton. In the statement, they noted "This is not the end of Real Friends. We have simply turned the page to the next chapter." [26]

Introduction of Cody Muraro and Torn In Two EP (2021-present)

One year and four months after Lambton's departure, the band announced Cody Muraro, formerly of Youth Fountain & Parting Ways, as their new vocalist. Pure Noise Records stated that the split with Lambton was amicable and a result of their "paths diverging." [27] They also announced their deal with Pure Noise Records and released two new singles, "Nervous Wreck" and "Storyteller", on June 21, 2021. [28] They released the EP Torn in Two in September 2021. The band released their next EP, There's Nothing Worse Than Too Late, on February 24, 2023.

Style and influences

Real Friends has been described as pop punk, [30] [31] emo [32] and emo pop. [33] Punknews reviewer said "If American Football went totally pop-punk, Real Friends would be the result." [34] Vocalist Dan Lambton has been compared to The Starting Line's Kenny Vasoli, The Wonder Years' Dan Campbell, and The Dangerous Summer's AJ Perdomo. [30] Bassist Kyle Fasel has cited American Football, Dashboard Confessional, The Early November, Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Ring, Saves the Day, The Starting Line, Spitalfield, Taking Back Sunday and Thursday as influences. [35]

Side projects

Lambton joined with Knuckle Puck members Joe Taylor and Ryan Rumchaks to form "rationale.". Taylor and Lambton both serve as guitarists and vocalists, alongside Rumchaks as drummer and Tyler Albertson (clockwise) & Nick Casasanto (counter-clockwise) as rotating bass guitarists. Rationale's single "Hangnail" was released on December 5, 2015, and their debut EP Confines followed four days later. [36]

Mayday Parade is an American rock band from Tallahassee, Florida. Formed in 2005, the band was a result of a merger between two local Tallahassee bands, Kid Named Chicago and Defining Moment. Their debut EP Tales Told by Dead Friends, was released in 2006, and sold over 50,000 copies without any label support. In July 2007, Mayday Parade released their debut album A Lesson in Romantics. Having been signed to Fearless Records since 2006, the band also signed onto a major label with Atlantic Records in 2009. Their second studio album, Anywhere but Here was released in October 2009 and their third album, entitled Mayday Parade, was released in October 2011. Mayday Parade's fourth album, titled Monsters in the Closet, was released in October 2013. Their fifth album, titled Black Lines, was released October 2015. In April 2018, the band signed to Rise Records and released their sixth studio album Sunnyland on June 15, 2018. Their seventh studio album, What It Means To Fall Apart, was released in November 2021.

<i>Tales Told by Dead Friends</i> 2006 EP by Mayday Parade

Tales Told by Dead Friends is the debut EP by American rock band Mayday Parade, released on June 13, 2006. The group resulted from the merger of local acts Kid Named Chicago and Defining Moment. With their line-up solidified, the first two songs they wrote together were "When I Get Home, You're So Dead" and "Three Cheers for Five Years". Soon afterwards, they recorded an EP, Tales Told by Dead Friends, with Lee Dyess. The group followed Warped Tour and sold copies to people in line. By the end of summer, the band had sold 10,000 copies of the EP. This attracted the attention of Fearless Records, who would sign the band in late August. The group went on tour from September to November, before the EP was reissued by Fearless.

<i>A Lesson in Romantics</i> 2007 studio album by Mayday Parade

A Lesson in Romantics is the debut studio album by American rock band Mayday Parade. The band resulted from a merger of two separate bands, Kid Named Chicago and Defining Moment. In June 2006 the band released an EP, Tales Told by Dead Friends, which they sold to people by following the 2006 edition of Warped Tour and offering copies; it eventually sold 10,000 copies. The band signed to Fearless Records in August. A Lesson in Romantics was recorded in early 2007 with producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount. Vocalist/guitarist Jason Lancaster left the band in March 2007 citing a lack of writing credit on the band's releases. Prior to the release of A Lesson in Romantics, "Black Cat", "When I Get Home, You're So Dead", and "Jamie All Over" were made available for streaming. After the album's release, the band participated in the 2007 edition of Warped Tour.

The group has had several line-up changes throughout their career, with Hansen as the only remaining founding member. Their second EP, Empire reached No. 15 on the Top Heatseekers, meeting a great amount of positive acclaim upon its release in 2009. The following year, the group recorded and released their debut studio album, Deceiver on August 31, 2010, which reached No. 97 on the Billboard 200 and 15 on Independent Albums.

Artist vs. Poet was an American power pop band from Fort Worth, Texas, United States, formed in late 2007 by Jason Dean, Craig Calloway, Jeff Olsen, Patrick Rigden, Joe Kirkland, Joe Westbrook, and Tarcy Thomason. After many changes in the band, Artist vs Poet is made up of Joe Kirkland, on vocals, guitar and keyboards, and Jason Dean, on bass and drums. Kirkland was also a contestant in the third season of the American NBC reality show The Voice.

Man Overboard is an American pop punk band from Mt. Laurel and Williamstown, New Jersey that began in 2008. Since then, they had released two EPs, an acoustic EP, a split with Boston pop punk band Transit, a compilation and four full-length albums. Taking influence from such pop punk acts as Blink-182, Saves the Day, and Taking Back Sunday, Man Overboard played a brand of upbeat and poppy pop punk with the emotion of 90s emo acts such as The Promise Ring. The band was signed to Rise Records. They are well known for their motto within the pop punk scene to "Defend Pop Punk". On January 28, 2016, they announced a hiatus on their official website; the hiatus ended on August 2, 2018, when the band announced a 10-year anniversary tour.
