Redcar Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Redcar, North Yorkshire, England. The racecourse was opened in 1872.
Racing began at Redcar on the sands at Redcar beach in the early 18th century. The final meeting here was in 1870. In 1872, Redcar Racecourse as it stands today was opened with a Grandstand erected in 1876. [1]
During the First World War and the Second World War the racecourse was used as both an airfield and an army camp. In 1945 after the Second World War, Major Leslie Petch OBE managed the racecourse and revamped the neglected course. Redcar was the first racecourse in the UK to have both a timing clock and furlong posts. Under Petch's stewardship, a new grandstand was erected in 1964. This stand is still at the racecourse today. Following his retirement, the Zetland family took control of the racecourse. Lord Zetland introduced the Two-Year-Old Trophy race. Notable winners of this most lucrative race at Redcar include Pipalong, Captain Rio, Somnus and Limato. [3] [4]
Zetland sold part of the Redcar Racecourse land to supermarket chain, Safeway, for £3.6 million in order to finance major developments on the racecourse including new stables. [5]
On 30 July 1980, prolific owner Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum had his first winner in the UK with Mushref. [6]
In 1996, International Racecourse Management took control of the racecourse. The nephew of Major Leslie Petch, John Sanderson, became chairman in 2018. [7]
Redcar is a left handed flat oval of just over 1m 4f with relatively tight banked bends. There is also a 3f chute that joins the track where the top bend meets the straight, providing a 1m straight course, purported to be the only 'Straight Mile' in the UK that is straight and level. [8]

In the following year he emerged as a top-class performer with a front-running style, winning the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and the York Stakes and being placed in both the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes, In 2014 he finished second in the Dubai World Cup before recording an upset win over a strong field in the Eclipse Stakes. He was retired at the end of the season with a record of five wins from sixteen races.

Limato is a retired Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was a sprinter who produced his best performances over six and seven furlongs on good or firm ground. In a racing career lasting from June 2014 to September 2020 he ran 33 times and won 14 races, including two at Group One level. He achieved the feat of winning at least one Group or Listed race in each of his seven racing seasons.
Ashal was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was a specialist stayer best known for his upset victory in the 1990 Ascot Gold Cup. After finishing unplaced on his only start as a two-year-old he spent the following year competing in minor races at Redcar Racecourse, winning three times. In 1990 he began his campaign by finishing second to Sadeem at Salisbury Racecourse and then won the Group Three Oleander-Rennen in Germany. At Ascot, he coped with the wet conditions better than his opponents and won the Gold Cup by four lengths. He was beaten in his three remaining races although he did finish third in the Jockey Club Cup on his final appearance. He has been described as one of the worst horses to win the Gold Cup.
Hayil is an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his upset win in the 1997 Middle Park Stakes. As a two-year-old in England, he showed promising form in his first five starts, winning once and placing three times. On his final race of the season he was equipped with blinkers for the first time and won the Middle Park Stakes at odds of 14/1. After the death of his trainer David Morley he was transferred to France but never recovered his juvenile form and failed to win in seven subsequent races. Hayil later stood as a breeding stallion in Australia.
Tamayuz is a British-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won both of his races as a two-year-old in 2007 and took the Prix de Fontainebleau on his first run of 2008. After running poorly in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains he recorded Group 1 wins Prix Jean Prat and Prix Jacques Le Marois. On his only subsequent start he finished fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He has had some success as a breeding stallion.
Mustashry is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He finished fourth on his only run as a juvenile and won two minor races in the following year. As a four-year-old in 2017 he improved to win two races including the Group 3 Strensall Stakes. After being gelded he returned in 2018 to win the Gala Stakes, Park Stakes and Joel Stakes. In 2019 he won the Lockinge Stakes and the Challenge Stakes.
