History

Remington Arms was a notable American manufacturer of firearms, founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington and originally known as E. Remington and Sons. The company was acquired in June 2007 by a private equity firm, Cerberus Capital Management. [2] It became part of the firm's Freedom Group, which was renamed in 2015 as Remington Outdoor Company. Remington Outdoor Company declared bankruptcy in 2018, from which it emerged, and in 2020, following which it was broken up. [3] [4]

The firearm portion of Remington Arms (excluding Marlin Firearms) [5] was sold to Roundhill Group, LLC, [6] and was then organized as RemArms, LLC. Vista Outdoor purchased Remington Arms' ammunition business, [7] which it subsequently organized as Remington Ammunition. Vista Outdoor also purchased various intellectual property, including the Remington brand name. [7] RemArms licensed use of the brand name from Vista Outdoor in order to market its products using Remington Firearms branding. [8]

Both Remington Firearms and Remington Ammunition appear to claim Remington Arms' history, the former noting in a 2021 press release, "Founded in 1816, Remington Firearms is one of the nation’s oldest firearms brands, operating for 205 years" [9] and the latter noting on its website "We’ve been here since 1816." [10]

RemArms obtained a Federal Firearms License in early 2021, and resumed production of some firearms at the former-Remington Arms manufacturing facility in Ilion, New York. [11] The company announced its launch in September 2021, via a video from its CEO. [12]

In November 2021, the company announced it would relocate its global headquarters to LaGrange, Georgia, with plans to contain a new advanced manufacturing operation and a research and development center. [9] In November 2023, it was reported that the company would end its operations in Ilion in March 2024 with approximately 250 to 300 employees affected by the plant closure. [13] The plant's union representative, the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), condemned the planned closure. [14] Closure of the company's manufacturing operations in Ilion was reported to be imminent in mid-March 2024. [15]

As of March 2024, the company lists approximately 25 international distributors, located in: [16]

Europe: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine
South America: Argentina, Chile, Panama, Uruguay
Other: Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Turkey

Products

Remington Arms manufactured many different models of rifles, shotguns, and handguns during its existence.

A smaller number of products have been offered under the Remington Firearms brand. [17] As of March 2024, the following models are listed on the company's website: [18] [19]

The Remington Model 512 Sportmaster is a bolt-action rifle manufactured by Remington Arms. The Model 512 has a 25-inch (64 cm) barrel, a one-piece hardwood stock, and a blued metal finish. An unusual feature of this rifle is that it uses a tubular magazine in conjunction with a bolt action. The 5 mm Remington Rimfire Magnum or 5 mm RFM is a bottlenecked rimfire cartridge introduced by Remington Arms Company in 1969. Remington chambered it in a pair of bolt-action rifles, the Model 591 and Model 592, but this ammunition never became very popular, and the rifles were discontinued in 1974. About 52,000 rifles and 30,000 barrels for the T/C Contender pistol were sold during its brief production run. Remington discontinued the cartridge itself in 1982, leaving owners with no source of ammunition.

Previously the 22-410 Stevens Arms combination gun had been offered with a Tenite stock. The firearms market generally lacked experience with synthetic stocks, making the Nylon 66 a risky gamble for Remington. The model name was taken from the polymer of the same name.

The 2020–present United States ammunition shortage is the most recent of all the ammunition shortages in the United States. It arose out of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the 2020 United States presidential election, and the George Floyd protests. The lack of sufficient ammunition for consumers in the United States is to some extent ongoing.
