The Research Organization for Life Sciences and Environment (Indonesian : Organisasi Riset Ilmu Pengetahuan Hayati dan Lingkungan, ORIPHL) is one of Research Organizations under the umbrella of the National Research and Innovation Agency (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, BRIN). It was founded on 1 September 2021 as the Research Organization for Life Sciences (Organisasi Riset Ilmu Pengetahuan Hayati, ORIPH) transformation of Deputy II (Life Sciences) of Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia, LIPI) after the liquidation of LIPI into BRIN. On 24 January 2022, it is announced that the organization extended with fusion of the ORIPH with FORDA-MOF of Ministry of Environment and Forestry, resulted in formation of ORIPHL. The fusion expected to turn ORIPH to ORIPHL officially on 1 February 2022. [2] ORIPHL formation is finalized on 1 March 2022 and is functional since 4 March 2022. [3]

History

Founded on 1 September 2021 as ORIPH, ORIPH was transformation of Deputy II (Life Sciences) of LIPI after the liquidation of LIPI into BRIN. As research organizations of BRIN, as outlined in Article 175 and Article 176 of Chief of BRIN Decree No. 1/2021, every Research Organizations under BRIN are responsible and answered to Chief of BRIN. It also prescribed that the Research Organizations consisted with Head of Research Organizations, Centers, and Laboratories/Study Groups. [4] For the transitional period, as in Article 210 of Chief of BRIN Decree No. 1/2021 mandated, [4] the structure of ORIPH follows the preceding structure that already established during its time in LIPI. Due to this, the structure of ORIPH largely follows the Chief of LIPI Decree No. 24/2020. [5] In addition of the preexisting research centers, ORIPH also housed the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology after BRIN acquired it on 22 September 2021. [6] [7] The name of Eijkman Institute later changed to Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center, under the Life Sciences Research Organization of National Research and Innovation Agency. [8] On 22 September 2021, ORIPH constituting document, Chief of BRIN Decree No. 8/2021, signed by Laksana Tri Handoko and fully published on 8 October 2021. [9]

As ORIPH, the organization was briefly served as temporary house of Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center. After controversy over Eijkman demotion and split, Eijkman later restructured by BRIN but they reorganized and transferred to Health Research Organization, no longer under ORIPH anymore. [10]

On 24 January 2022, it is announced that the organization extended with fusion of the former FORDA-MOF. The fusion will turn ORIPH to ORIPHL officially on 1 February 2022. The reorganization also transferred Eijkman Molecular Biology Research Center to Health Research Organization. [2]

On 4 March 2022, ORIPHL is fully functional with inauguration of its first head, Iman Hidayat. [3]

The National Research and Innovation Agency is a cabinet-level government agency formed by the Indonesian government in 2019. Iman Hidayat is an Indonesian scientist and public official specialized in mycology, microbiology, and plant pathology. Prior his appointment as Acting Head of the Life Sciences Research Organization, he was a researcher at Research Center for Biomaterial, Indonesian Institutes of Sciences since 1 December 2002. He completed his bachelor degree in Biology at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Padjadjaran University in 2002, and his doctoral degree in Plant Pathology at Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University in 2009. During his time as researcher, he completed various courses on ascomycetes taxonomy, plant pathological microorganisms, and molecular phylogenetics.

The Polytechnic Institutes of Nuclear Technology, Indonesia is a state polytechnic under auspices of National Research and Innovation Agency. It was originally founded as Indonesian State College of Nuclear Technology of National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia, the primary training facility of BATAN. After BATAN dissolution, the polytechnics inherited by BRIN. It officially renamed as Politeknik Teknologi Nuklir on 30 October 2021. Since its foundation in 1985, the polytechnic had graduated more than its 1,300 graduates, which many of its graduates absorbed into BATAN and BAPETEN (mostly), with few of its graduates went to academia, health institutions, industries, and other private sectors and entrepreneurs.

The Research Organization for Health is one of Research Organizations under the umbrella of the National Research and Innovation Agency. The organization is transformation of National Institute of Health Research and Development of Ministry of Health.

The National Institute of Health Research and Development was a supporting unit of the Ministry of Health which is responsible for state research, development, and innovation in the field of health and medical sciences. On 24 January 2022, the formation of the agency is announced and to be formed on 1 February 2022. The agency is resulted from amalgamation of National Archaeology Research Institute, former Agency for Research and Development and Book Affairs of the Ministry of Education and Culture, part of Research, Development, Education, and Training Agency of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and Bureau for Checking Copies of the Quran of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The Research Organization for Electronics and Informatics is one of Research Organizations under the umbrella of the National Research and Innovation Agency. On 24 January 2022, the formation of the agency is announced and to be formed on 1 February 2022. The organization is resulted from restructuration of Assessment and Application of Technology Research Organization-BPPT and Engineering Science Research Organization, with addition of Human Resources Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. OREI formation is finalized on 1 March 2022 and is functional since 4 March 2022 with inauguration of its first head, Budi Prawara.

The Research Organization for Nanotechnology and Material is one of Research Organizations under the umbrella of the National Research and Innovation Agency. On 24 January 2022, the formation of the agency is announced and to be formed on 1 February 2022. The organization is resulted from restructuration of Assessment and Application of Technology Research Organization-BPPT and Engineering Science Research Organization. ORNM formation is finalized on 1 March 2022 and is functional since 4 March 2022 with inauguration of its first head, Ratno Nuryadi.

The Research Organization for Energy and Manufacture is one of Research Organizations under the umbrella of the National Research and Innovation Agency. On 24 January 2022, the formation of the agency is announced and to be formed on 1 February 2022. The organization is resulted from restructuration of Assessment and Application of Technology Research Organization-BPPT and Engineering Science Research Organization.
