Rialto is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Red Line. [1] The stop is at the southern side of St. James's Hospital, adjacent to James's Walk, near the areas of Rialto and Kilmainham. [2]
At this point, the Red Line follows an old canal alignment: The Grand Canal was opened in 1779, running from James's Street near Dublin city centre, through Sallins and further west. In 1796, a branch of the canal was added which took a circular route around the city centre from Suir Road to the current Grand Canal Dock in Ringsend. The original mainline later closed and its alignment lay empty for many years until it was selected as part of the route for the Luas line. [3]
The stop is also served by Dublin Bus routes 68, 68a, and S2.
Fatima is intended to be a stop on the proposed Luas line to Lucan. [4]
A short distance down the line from the stop is Harcourt Bridge, which carries the South Circular Road over the tram line (and previously the canal). The original bridge was built in 1795 and named after the chairman of the Grand Canal Company, Simon Harcourt, 1st Earl Harcourt. However, it soon developed the nickname Rialto Bridge due to its similarity to the bridge with that name in Venice (which also spans a Grand Canal ). This is believed to be what gives the suburb its name. [5]
The current bridge bears little resemblance to the Venetian bridge, and it has been suggested that it was built in the early 20th century. [6] The bridge was further remodeled during the construction of the Luas line in order to comply with safety requirements; the stone railings at the side were replaced with solid concrete blocks which continue the pattern of lines carved into the rest of the bridge. The Grand Canal is the southernmost of a pair of canals that connect Dublin, in the east of Ireland, with the River Shannon in the west, via Tullamore and a number of other villages and towns, the two canals nearly encircling Dublin's inner city. Its sister canal on the Northside of Dublin is the Royal Canal. The last working cargo barge passed through the Grand Canal in 1960.
Luas is a tram system in Dublin, Ireland. There are two main lines: the Green Line, which began operating on 30 June 2004, and the Red Line which opened on 26 September 2004. Since then, the red line has been extended and split into different branches further out of the city and the green line has been extended north and south as a single line. Since the northern extension of the green line in 2017, the two lines intersect in the city centre. The system now has 67 stops and 42.5 kilometres (26.4 mi) of revenue track, which in 2023 carried 48.2 million passengers, an increase of 24% compared to 2022.
Connolly station or Dublin Connolly is one of the busiest railway stations in Dublin and Ireland, and is a focal point in the Irish route network. On the North side of the River Liffey, it provides InterCity, Enterprise and commuter services to the north, north-west, south-east and south-west. The north–south Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Luas red line light rail services also pass through the station. The station offices are the headquarters of Irish Rail, Iarnród Éireann. Opened in 1844 as Dublin Station, the ornate facade has a distinctive Italianate tower at its centre.
The Green Line is one of the two lines of Dublin's Luas light rail system. The Green Line was formerly entirely in the south side of Dublin city. It mostly follows the route of the old Harcourt Street railway line, which was reserved for possible re-use when it closed in 1958. The Green Line allows for passengers to transfer at O’ Connell GPO and Marlborough to Luas Red Line services and also allows commuters to use Broombridge as an interchange station to reach outer suburbs such as Castleknock and Ongar as well as Iarnrod Éireann services.
The Harcourt Street Railway Line was a railway line that ran from Harcourt Street in Dublin through the southern suburbs to Bray. It was one of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway's two northern main lines, the other being the coastal line to Westland Row.
Broadstone railway station was the Dublin terminus of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR), located in the Dublin suburb of Broadstone. The site also contained the MGWR railway works and a steam locomotive motive power depot. A Luas tram station opened at the front of the station in 2017.
Rialto is an inner suburb of Dublin, situated on the city's southside. The area takes its name from the Harcourt Bridge, which was commonly known as the Rialto Bridge due to its resemblance to the shape of the bridge of that name in Venice.

After departing the stop, northbound trams turn left and traverse the grounds of the hospital on their way to Connolly or The Point. Southbound trams continue along an abandoned canal alignment, travelling towards Tallaght or Saggart.
Suir Road is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Red Line. The stop is located at the intersection of Suir Road, Davitt Road and Dolphin Road, next to a Canal Lock.
Goldenbridge is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Red Line. The stop is located next to a lock on a section of track which runs alongside the Grand Canal, near Goldenbridge Cemetery.
Drimnagh is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Red Line. The stop is located on a section of track which runs alongside the Grand Canal, in Drimnagh. It provides access to Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin and the Richmond Barracks.

The stop has two edge platforms, and is of the same design as many Luas stops. After departing the stop, northbound trams head along a section of track which runs adjacent to the Grand Canal on their way to Connolly or The Point. Southbound trams turn onto Naas Road, travelling south-west towards Tallaght or Saggart.
Ballyogan Wood is a stop on the green line of the Luas light-rail tram system in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, County Dublin, Ireland. The stop provides access to the nearby residential area of Ballyogan, as well as providing access to the nearby Carrickmines Park.
Carrickmines is a stop on the Luas light rail tram system in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, County Dublin, Ireland, which serves the nearby village of Carrickmines. It opened in 2010 and was built on the site of a disused heavy rail station of the same name.

Milltown Luas stop is located a few yards north of the site of the former rail station of the same name.

It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Green Line, which re-uses the alignment of the Harcourt Street railway line which closed in 1958. Dundrum Luas stop is built on the same site as a former heavy rail station of the same name.
