The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association (NBA), is the oldest and one of four major organizations which sanction professional boxing bouts, alongside the World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). The WBA awards its world championship title at the professional level. Founded in the United States in 1921 by 13 state representatives as the NBA, in 1962 it changed its name in recognition of boxing's growing popularity worldwide and began to gain other nations as members.

Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux was a super bantamweight professional boxing match contested between WBO and The Ring champion Nonito Donaire and WBA (Super) champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. The bout took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on April 13, 2013 and was televised on HBO. Entering the bout, Donaire had a record of 31–1 and had made three successful defenses of the WBO title he had won by defeating Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. Rigondeaux, meanwhile, was undefeated in his eleven fights and was fighting for the fourth time as champion; he won the WBA interim title by defeating Ricardo Cordoba in November 2010 and defeated Rico Ramos to become official champion in January 2012.

Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux was a professional boxing match between world champions Vasiliy Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux for the WBO junior lightweight championship. The bout was held on December 9, 2017 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are regarded as two of the best amateurs in history, with each boxer winning two Olympic gold medals. It was the first time dual gold medal winners fought professionally, and it was a fight the great Roy Jones Jr. stated, "To me, on paper, this is the best professional fight that has ever been made." Lomachenko won by TKO when Rigondeaux retired on his stool after round 6 after claiming to have injured his left hand.
