Richard A. Pettigrew (born June 10,1930) was an American politician in the state of Florida.
Pettigrew was born in Charleston,West Virginia in 1930,and moved to Florida with his family that same year. He attended the University of Florida and is an attorney. [1] He served in the Florida House of Representatives for the 97th district,as a Democrat,serving from 1963 to 1972. From 1971 to 1972,he was Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. [2]

He served in the army of the Confederate States of America,fighting in the 1862 Peninsula Campaign and played a prominent role in the Battle of Gettysburg. In this role,Pettigrew was one of three division commanders in the disastrous assault known as Pickett's Charge on the final day of Gettysburg. He was wounded,in the right hand,during the Pickett-Pettigrew Charge on July 3,1863,and was later mortally wounded during the Union Confederate rearguard action while the Confederates retreated to Virginia near Falling Waters,Virginia,on July 14,dying several days thereafter on July 17,1863.

The 1974 United States Senate election in Florida was held on November 5,1974. Incumbent Senator Edward Gurney,a Republican,declined to seek a second term after being indicted for taking bribes in return for his influence with the Federal Housing Administration. The primary for the Republican nomination pitted Eckerd drug store owner Jack Eckerd against Florida Public Service Commissioner Paula Hawkins. Eckerd won handily,receiving approximately 67.5% of the vote. The Democratic primary,however,was a crowded field with eleven candidates vying for the nomination. Because no candidate received a majority of the votes,U.S. Representative Bill Gunter and Secretary of State of Florida Richard Stone advanced to a run-off election. Stone won by a small margin of 1.68%.
