Richard Durst is an academic administrator who served as the eighth and last president of Baldwin-Wallace College located in Berea,Ohio. [1] He became president in 2006 and remained until 2012. [2] Durst was replaced by Robert C. Helmer in July 2012 as the school converted to Baldwin Wallace University [2]
Richard Durst was born in 1945,in Scottsbluff,Nebraska to cattle ranchers Wayne and Pearle Jenson Durst. His parents had a cattle ranch in Harrisburg,Nebraska. Richard spent most of his childhood living with his grandparents in Kansas City,Missouri. Richard Durst served four years in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He is a graduate of Missouri Western State University and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma in Scenic Design for Theatre. He and his wife,Karen,were married in 1974 in Norman,Oklahoma. He is the father of two:Amanda Durst and Derek Durst. [3]
Before assuming the Presidency of Baldwin-Wallace College,Durst was Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture and Executive Director of University Arts Services at the Pennsylvania State University (2000–2006). Prior to that,he was Dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts (1996–2000) and Special Assistant to the Chancellor (1997–2000) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Durst served as Dean of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Minnesota,Duluth from 1989–1996,where he was full professor and then department chair before that. Additionally,Durst has served as Executive Director of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans (ICFAD);he is a Past President of both the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and the International Organization of Scenographers,Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT),whose world headquarters are in Amsterdam,Netherlands. In March 2011 Durst announced his intention to retire in May 2012. [4] In 2012,Durst retired as president [3] [5] [6] During Durst's presidency,Durst oversaw the early stages of the school's conversion to a university. [2] In the fall of 2011 a task force was developed by BW President Dick Durst. On February 11,2012 it was announced Baldwin–Wallace College will become Baldwin Wallace University after approval by the BW Board of Trustees. The name would become effective on July 1 of 2012 with complete implementation by the end of 2012. In addition to the new university designation,seal,and logo "B-W" will drop the hyphen in its name. The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music is part of the Baldwin Wallace University,in Berea,Ohio. The main building is Kulas Hall. The Conservatory is home to the Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival,the oldest collegiate Bach Festival in the United States. The nationally renowned Music Theatre program,directed by Victoria Bussert,draws hundreds of auditioners each year. The instrumental programs have produced extremely successful musicians;several BW alumni presently play with the Cleveland Orchestra.

Neal Malicky served as the sixth president of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea,Ohio from 1981 to 1999. Malicky was succeeded by Mark H. Collier in 1999. A building on the north side of BW's campus bears Malicky's name. The Neal Malicky Center for the Social Sciences was named in his honor in 2001.

The history of Baldwin Wallace University dates back to 1828,when co-founder John Baldwin settled in present-day Berea,Ohio. His founding eventually established Baldwin–Wallace College. This founding of present-day Baldwin Wallace University began when Baldwin Institute was established in 1845. With the help of James Wallace,Baldwin Institute began offering college courses. Eventually,in 1863,a resolution established a separate school from Baldwin University to serve the booming local German population called German Wallace College. Originally part of Baldwin Institute,German Wallace College was established just down the road. As a result of financial hardships the schools merged in 1913,forming Baldwin-Wallace College. In 2010,several buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places combining the former Lyceum Village Square and German Wallace College to form the BW South Campus Historic District. In 2012,Baldwin-Wallace College became Baldwin Wallace University and established the BW North Campus Historic District. The Conservatory is home to the Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival,the oldest collegiate Bach Festival and the second-oldest Bach festival in the United States honoring Johann Sebastian Bach.

Robert C. Helmer is an American academic who became the ninth president of Baldwin Wallace University in Berea,Ohio,on July 1,2012. He serves as the first president of Baldwin Wallace University after the school became a university in 2012. Helmer became president after Richard Durst who served since 2006.
John Wheeler was an American educator,the second principal of Baldwin Institute and the first president of Baldwin University in Berea,Ohio. Baldwin College would eventually merge with nearby German Wallace College to become Baldwin–Wallace College. Wheeler has a building named after him on the Baldwin Wallace University campus.

James N. Hilvert Jr. is an American football coach. He is the head football coach at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea,Ohio,a position he had held since the 2017 season. Hilvert served as the head football coach at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills,Kentucky for 2007 to 2014.
