Richard Jordan Palacios (born May 16,1997) is an American professional baseball outfielder and second baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Cleveland Guardians and St. Louis Cardinals.
Palacios attended Berkeley Carroll School in New York City and played college baseball at Towson University. [1] In 2017,he played collegiate summer baseball with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League. [2] He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. [3]
Palacios made his professional debut in 2018 with the Arizona League Indians,Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Lake County Captains,batting .361 with six home runs and thirty runs batted in over 45 games. [4] He did not play in 2019 due to a torn labrum or in 2020 because the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He started 2021 with the Akron RubberDucks before being promoted to the Columbus Clippers. [5] Over 103 games between the two teams,he slashed .297/.404/.471 with seven home runs,48 runs batted in,33 doubles,and twenty stolen bases. [6]
The newly-named Cleveland Guardians selected Palacios to their 40-man roster on November 19,2021. [7]
After beginning the 2022 season with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers,Palacios was recalled by the Guardians on April 25,2022,and made his major league debut that same day,starting in left field. He collected his first career hit in the same game,a single off of Los Angeles Angels starter Michael Lorenzen. [8] He played in 54 games during his rookie campaign,hitting .232/.293/.286 with no home runs and 10 RBI.
Palacios was optioned to Triple-A Columbus to begin the 2023 season. [9] In 56 games with Columbus,Palacios batted .217/.351/.318 with 3 home runs,30 RBI,and 6 stolen bases. On June 11,2023,Palacios was designated for assignment by the Guardians after Cody Morris was activated off of the injured list. [10]
On June 16,2023,Palacios was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations. [11] In 32 games for the Cardinals,he batted .258/.307/.516 with 6 home runs and 16 RBI.
On January 5,2024,the Cardinals traded Palacios to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Andrew Kittredge. [12]
On the international level,Palacios is eligible to represent the Netherlands and Curaçao (through his Curaçaoan mother),Puerto Rico (through his father),and the United States (his birthplace). [13] [14] He was selected to the Dutch national team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic. [15] He appeared in a single game,going hitless in three at-bats in a 9–5 loss against Taiwan. [16] [17]
His brother,Joshua Palacios,plays in MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization,and his uncle,Rey Palacios,previously played in MLB. [18] [19] Palacios' father is of Puerto Rican descent, [13] and his mother is from Curaçao,and thus he was eligible to play for the Netherlands national baseball team and was selected to play for them in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Shairon Benjamin Martis is a Dutch-Curaçaoan professional baseball pitcher for Curaçao Neptunus of the Honkbal Hoofdklasse. He has previously pitched for the Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball. Martis was a member of the Netherlands in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and the 2013 World Baseball Classic,as well as the 2011 Baseball World Cup. He played for Team Netherlands in the 2019 European Baseball Championship,at the Africa/Europe 2020 Olympic Qualification tournament in Italy in September 2019.
Rogearvin Argelo "Roger" Bernadina,nicknamed "The Shark," is a Dutch Curaçaoan professional baseball outfielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Washington Nationals,Philadelphia Phillies,Cincinnati Reds,and Los Angeles Dodgers. He also played in the KBO League for the Kia Tigers and in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) for the Lamigo Monkeys. He was a member of the Dutch national baseball team in international competitions including the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
Sharlon Romans Emederio Schoop is a Dutch-Curaçaoan professional baseball shortstop. He played for several organizations in Minor League Baseball and for the Amsterdam Pirates of the Honkbal Hoofdklasse. He played for the Netherlands in many international baseball tournaments,including the World Baseball Classic and WBSC Premier12.
Yurendell Eithel DeCaster is a Dutch-Curaçaoan former professional baseball third baseman. He played 3 games in Major League Baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006. He played for Team Netherlands in many tournaments,including the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Kalian Rivalino Sams is a Dutch former professional baseball outfielder who reached Triple-A in Minor League Baseball and played professionally in other countries. He also played for the Netherlands in many international baseball tournaments.
Jonathan Rufino Jezus Schoop is a Curaçaoan professional baseball second baseman for the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna of the Mexican League. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles,Milwaukee Brewers,Minnesota Twins,and Detroit Tigers. He was an All-Star in 2017.
