Smith qualified for a fourth, the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. She did, however, receive one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for the spurned athletes.

The javelin throw at the Summer Olympics is one of four track and field throwing events held at the multi-sport event. The women's event was first contested at the 1932 Olympics, becoming the second women's throws event after the discus in 1928.
