In Denmark, rindalism (Danish: rindalisme) refers to opposition to abstract art and especially public funding thereof. Named after Peter Rindal , the term covered the mid-1960s movement in Denmark against the establishment of Statens Kunstfond.
On 27 May 1964, the parties in the Danish Parliament, except for De Uafhængige, voted for the law on Statens Kunstfond. The law introduced a new administrative body, Statens Kunstfond, as well as a reprioritisation and massive expansion of art support, so that it reached 3.5 million kr. [1] [2]
On 29 January 1965, the first young artists received the first three-year scholarships. Within literature, these were Klaus Rifbjerg, Thorkild Hansen, Sven Holm, Knud Holst, Ulla Ryum and Jess Ørnsbo. The tax-financed state support for Rifbjerg in particular caused outrage, as he lived life with expensive cars and trips. However, the subsidies awarded to Peter Bonnén from Statens Kunstfond also caused outrage. [3] Ordnet.dk, a website by the Danish Language and Literature Society, defines rindalism as "opposition to or distancing from public financial support for artists and art purchases". [4]
During a press conference against the new arts subsidies law, which apparently got behind both Progress Party politicians, artists and cultural mediators, Peter Rindal and his supporters quickly managed to collect around 60,000 protest signatures. However, the protests did not have much significance for the Statens Kunstfond or its administration, whose budget quickly grew from 3,5 million kr. in 1965 to 41,8 million kr. in 1993 and 73,1 million kr. in 2005. According to Dagbladet Information in 2009, the term rindalism was first used by the tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet . [5]
In 2022, member of the Danish Parliament Henrik Dahl (LA) described himself as an rindalist. [6] In 2023, Alex Ahrendtsen (DF), also MF, published a book about rindalism titled Rindal: Kampen mod kultureliten og velfærdsstaten (Rindal: The struggle against the cultural elite and the welfare state), [7] in which context Dahl called for the revival of rindalism. De Gyldne Laurbær is a Danish literature award, which was established in 1949. The award is handed by The Committee De Gyldne Laurbær, formerly Boghandlerklubben. The prize is given annually in February or March. Originally the award was a laurel wreath, a golden pin with an inscription, some money and a book gift worth 2500 DKK. Today the award is a laurel wreathe, a diploma and a book gift worth 2500 DKK. The award is handed at a ceremony arranged by the publishing house which has published the winning book and by the Committee De Gyldne Laurbær. Early in January every year the committee sends out ballot to all the Danish bookshops, which then give their vote for a Danish book which was published the year before. An author can only win The Golden Laurel once-in-a-lifetime, so the bookshops can not vote for an author who has already won the prize once before. The winner is usually one of the bestsellers among the Danish books. On the day when it is decided who wins the Golden Laurel, the president of the Committee of The Golden Laurel informs the winner about the award, while journalists follow the event.

The 2020 Danish mink cull, commonly known as the Mink Case or the Mink Scandal (Minkskandalen), was the government-mandated slaughter of all roughly 17 million mink that were being raised on farms for their fur in Denmark. The cull was in response to the detection of Cluster 5, an outbreak of a novel variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the mink, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark. The cluster led to concerns that the potential of spillover to humans could reduce the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. The cull began on 4 November 2020; however, it was later discovered that the cull orders had been given without legal authority, causing a political scandal.
