The district covers the local government areas of Abua–Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akuku-Toru, Asari-Toru, Bonny, Degema and Ogba–Egbema–Ndoni. In 2014, it had a projected population of 2,366,158.

They are part of the Igbo speaking Areas of Rivers State with three Tribes starting with Ogba as the dominant tribe with 12 legislative wards and the Egbema and Ndoni Tribes with 2&3 legislative wards respectively. It is majorly upland and home to the highest upstream Oil and Gas exploration/exploitation activity in the State since early 1960's with about 12 mining/producing fields operated by AGIP, Total Energies and Shell/NPDC with many other reserve/untapped fields. Ahoada West is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, located northwest of Port Harcourt. It was extracted in 1996 from the old Ahoada Local Government that makes up the present Orashi Region of Rivers State. Its seat is in the town of Akinima.

Wilson Asinobi Ake is a former member of the Senate of Nigeria who represented the Rivers West senatorial district from 2007 to 2015. He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Ekpeye is one of many languages spoken in Rivers State, Nigeria. According to Roger Blench, Ekpeye is classified as an Igboid language. Although an Igboid language, Ekpeye has evolved to a very distinct Igboid language that is phonologically different from other Igboid languages. The Engenni, Ogba and Ikwerre languages are closely related to Ekpeye. Ekpeye has many mutually intelligible dialects.

Osinakachukwu Ideozu is a Nigerian businessman and People's Democratic Party politician. He is currently a member of the Senate of Nigeria representing the Rivers West senatorial district. Ideozu was a member and Minority Whip of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2003 where he represented Ahoada East I and was subsequently elected into the Nigerian House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007 where he represented Abua-Odual/Ahoada East Federal Constituency. Ideozu was appointed the Honourable Commissioner of Finance in October 2007 by the then Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, a position he held till June 2009 when the cabinet was dissolved.

Elections in Rivers State are supervised and conducted by two major electoral bodies, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). There are 23 local government areas, 319 electoral wards and 4442 polling units in the state. Elections for Governor and the House of Assembly are held every four years, along with federal elections for President and the National Assembly.

Akinima is a town in the region of Ahoada West Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Akinima is the headquarter of Ahoda West. Akinima is in the north western part of Rivers State, under Rivers West Senatorial district in Port Harcourt city. Akinima is one of the areas that is being affected by annual flooding in Rivers State.
