Rkia El Moukim (born 22 February 1988 in Guelmim) is a Moroccan long-distance runner. [1] [2]
In 2014, El Moukim won the Des Moines International Half Marathon [3] as well as the Paris-Versailles Race, setting a record of 52 min 25s. [4] She finished sixth in the 2014 New York Marathon and tenth in the 2015 London Marathon.
El Moukim qualified to represent Morocco in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, competing in the Women's Marathon event. [2]
Michel Johann Théato was a Luxembourgish long-distance runner, and the winner of the marathon at the 1900 Olympics in Paris running for France. He was born in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg and died in Paris, France.

Bakir Benaïssa is a Moroccan former long-distance runner who competed in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, finishing 8th in the marathon in 2:21:21.4, and in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He won the 10,000 meters and finished second at the 5,000 meters at the Pan-Arab Games in Beirut in 1957, and won the quadrennial Mediterranean Games marathons in 1959 and 1963. He was born in Rabat. The 1960 Rome marathon resulted in a world record for winner, Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila, with Benaïssa's teammate, Rhadi Ben Abdesselam, finishing a close second.
Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the Games. They were due to be held from 31 July – 9 August 2020, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were postponed to 2021, with the track and field events set for 30 July – 8 August. The sport of athletics at these Games was split into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, remaining in Tokyo, and road running events and racewalking events, moved to Sapporo. A total of 48 events were held, one more than in 2016, with the addition of a mixed relay event.
The marathon at the Summer Olympics is the only road running event held at the multi-sport event. The men's marathon has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since the first modern Olympics in 1896. Nearly ninety years later, the women's event was added to the programme at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Othmane El Goumri is a Moroccan long-distance runner. He represented his country at two outdoor and one indoor World Championships. In 2016 he was banned from competition for two years due to irregularities in his biological passport. He competed in the men's marathon at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won the 2023 Sydney marathon and dedicated his win to victims of the recent Marrakesh–Safi earthquake after almost withdrawing from the race a week earlier due to the devastating impact of the natural disaster, including on loved ones.
Bashir Abdi is a Somali-born Belgian long-distance runner. He won bronze medals in the marathon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2022 World Championships. In doing so, Abdi became both the first ever Belgian world championship medal winner at the marathon and the first Belgian male athlete to win an individual medal at both the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships. He claimed silver in the 10,000 metres at the 2018 European Championships. He finished second and third at the 2020 Tokyo Marathon and 2022 London Marathon respectively. Abdi is the European record holder for the marathon.
El Hassan El-Abbassi is a Moroccan-born long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain. He was the gold medallist in the 10,000 metres at the 2014 Asian Games and the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships. He has a personal best of 27:25.02 minutes for that distance. El-Abbassi is currently suspended from competition due to an Athletics Integrity Unit investigation following the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Soufiane El Bakkali is a Moroccan runner specializing in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, having previously finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the World Athletics Championships, El Bakkali won two gold medals, winning his first in 2022 and later in 2023, He won silver in 2017 and bronze in 2019. He also placed third at the 2019 African Games and second at the 2018 African Championships.
Yassine Rachik is a Moroccan-born Italian long-distance runner who won the Italian Athletics Championships three times and also won an individual bronze medal at the 2018 European Athletics Championships.
The men's marathon event at the 2020 Summer Olympics started at 07:00 on 8 August 2021 in Sapporo, Japan. 106 athletes from 46 nations competed. The previous Olympic champion, Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, successfully defended his title, with Dutch and Belgian athletes Abdi Nageeye and Bashir Abdi gaining silver and bronze, respectively. Kipchoge was the third man to repeat as Olympic marathon champion, after Abebe Bikila and Waldemar Cierpinski. The Netherlands and Belgium earned their first men's marathon medals since 1980 and 1976, respectively.
Mohamed Reda El Aaraby is a Moroccan long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon. In 2019, he competed in the men's marathon at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar. He did not finish his race.
Morocco will be scheduled to compete in the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan from 25 August to 6 September 2021. Morocco will be hosting the first African Para Games in January 2020 which will act as a Games qualifier in some sports.
Yassine El Fathaoui is a Moroccan-born Italian long-distance runner, and was a part of the Italian athletics team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He competed in the Marathon ending 47th.
Azeddine Habz is a French middle- and long-distance runner. He won the bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the 2023 European Indoor Championships.
