Robert Lee Carothers (born September 3,1942), [2] a writer and poet,served as chancellor of the Minnesota State University System and the tenth president of the University of Rhode Island from 1991 to 2009.
Robert Carothers was born on September 3,1942,in Sewickley,Pennsylvania to Robert Fleming Carothers and Mary (Skinner) Carothers. [2] He attended public schools in the Quaker Valley. Carothers received his B.A. degree from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania in 1965. [2] He joined Delta Sigma Phi fraternity Delta Nu Chapter in 1962 and was elected the President of the Fraternity twice. [2] From 1960 to 1968,Carothers served in the United States Army,and availed of military scholarships for his studies. [2] On November 2,1974,he married Mary Patricia "Pattie" Ruane (1948-2022). [3]
Carothers earned a Ph.D. degree at Kent State University in 1969 and a J.D. degree from the McDowell School of Law,University of Akron in 1980, [4] and he was admitted into the Pennsylvania Bar Association in 1981. [5]
Robert Carothers began his academic career in 1969 at his alma mater Edinboro University as a professor and dean,eventually becoming its vice president. [6] He went on to serve as president of Southwest Minnesota State University from 1983 to 1986,and chancellor of the Minnesota State University System from 1986 to 1991 before being selected as the tenth president of the University of Rhode Island. [7] Early in his presidential tenure at URI,Carothers was faced with the takeover of Taft Hall,the oldest academic building on campus,by 200 mostly African-American students protesting racial discrimination on campus. Carothers was able to diffuse the tensions by advocating for a Multicultural Center at the heart of the campus. [8] [9] Throughout his tenure at URI,he was known for changing the student culture of the university from a 'party school' to an outward looking 'college with a conscience.' [4]
He was a member of National Institute Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (Committee on Campus Drinking 1999 to 2002). [2] Also during his presidential tenure,Carothers and his second wife Jayne Richmond,dean of URI's University College,were active in URI campus philanthropic projects. [10] During his administration,there was a strengthening of anti-discrimination toward LGBTQ members of the campus community. [11] He retired from academia in May 2009 and David M. Dooley,former Provost at Montana State University,took over as the URI's 11th President.
In their retirement from URI,Carothers and Jayne Richmond have been engaged in academic consulting. [12] Carothers has been honored recipient of several awards,including the Humanitarian Award,from the Urban League of Rhode Island,2000;the Jean Hicks Award,Rhode Island Conference for Community and Justice,2000;History Makers Salute from Rhode Island Historical Society 2001;the Silver Anniversary Honor Roll Award,American Cancer Society,and the Council Fellows Mentor Award,from the American Council of Education in 2005. [2] The main library at the URI campus has been named the Robert L. Carothers Library and Learning Commons. [13] Carothers was also honored in 2017 by the University with an honorary doctorate for his services to the University and the State of Rhode Island. [6]

The college football rivalry between the University of Connecticut and the University of Rhode Island dates back to the 1890s and was born largely out of proximity,with the schools being less than 60 miles apart. The schools competed in all sports for decades as members of the Yankee Conference. Even though UConn became a charter member of the Big East in 1979,the schools continued to compete in football at the I-AA level as members of the Atlantic 10. The yearly games ended after UConn left the A-10 to move to I-A football in 2000.

Raymond George Bressler Sr. (1887–1948) was an American educator with expertise in American literature and agricultural extension who served as a university administrator in Texas and Pennsylvania,and served as president of Rhode Island State College from 1931 to 1940. While serving as president during the Great Depression,Bressler managed decreasing student enrollments and ambitious building projects on campus primarily funded by the Works Progress Administration. Despite his success in guiding the numerous building projects and his popularity among students and faculty,he fell into political disfavor with the college's board of trustees,leading to his forced retirement in 1940. Despite Bressler's disfavor with the trustees,the newly elected Rhode Island Governor,J. Howard McGrath upon his inauguration in January 1941 granted Bressler an appointment to his cabinet as Director of Agriculture and Conservation,where he remained in office through the following gubernatorial administration of John O. Pastore until his death on 9 May 1948.
Francis Henry "Fran" Horn (1908-1999) was an American educator with expertise in English literature and higher education who served as a university administrator at several institutions in the Eastern United States,and served as president of several colleges and universities,including the Pratt Institute from 1953-1957,the University of Rhode Island (URI) from 1958 to 1967,Albertus Magnus College from 1968-1970,and the American College of Switzerland from 1972-1975. While serving as president of the University of Rhode Island,he oversaw the founding of two graduate schools,the Graduate Library School and the Graduate School of Oceanography,as well as the establishment of the URI Faculty Senate,and he managed rapidly increasing student enrollments and ambitious building projects on the URI campus. Despite his success in guiding the numerous building projects and building the national and international reputation of the university,he fell into political disfavor with the university's board of trustees primarily for his political aspirations,leading to his forced resignation from URI in 1967. Horn was elected as a member of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 1967,and he spend his retirement years after 1983 at his home in Kingston near the URI campus.
Arthur L. Hardge was an American civil rights movement leader,a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church,and a University of Rhode Island administrator. In 1968,he became Rhode Island's first African American cabinet member when Governor John Chafee appointed him to serve as director of the Rhode Island Department of Community Affairs.
