Robert J. Cordy (born May 18, 1949) [1] is a former Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court who served from 2001 to 2016.
Cordy graduated from Dartmouth College in 1971 and Harvard Law School in 1974. After graduation, Cordy served as a defense attorney on the Massachusetts Defenders Committee. From 1978 to 1979, he served as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Revenue, and then in 1979 he became an Associate General Council on the State Ethics Commission. In 1982, Cordy was appointed a federal prosecutor and eventually became Chief of the Public Corruption Unit.
From 1987 to 1991, he was a partner at Burns & Levinson. From 1991 to 1993, he served as Chief Legal Counsel to Governor William Weld. In 1993, Cordy became a partner at McDermott, Will & Emery in 1993, working there until his appointment to the Supreme Judicial Court in 2001. [2] [3] In July 2016, Cordy wrote for the unanimous court when it upheld the manslaughter indictment of a teenage girl for text messages that caused the death of Conrad Roy. [4] [5] He retired from the Court on August 12, 2016 to return to private practice.
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) is the highest court in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Although the claim is disputed by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the SJC claims the distinction of being the oldest continuously functioning appellate court in the Americas, with a recognized history dating to the establishment of the Massachusetts Superior Court of Judicature in 1692 under the charter of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
Margaret Hilary Marshall is an American jurist who served as the 24th chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the first woman to hold the position. She was chief justice from 1999 to 2010. On July 21, 2010, she announced her retirement. She was Senior Fellow of the Yale Corporation until she retired from the board in 2016, Senior Counsel at Choate Hall & Stewart, and a member of the Council of the American Law Institute. Marshall was elected in 2017 to the American Philosophical Society.
Ruth Ida Abrams was the first female justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, where she served from 1978 to 2000, and the first female appellate justice in Massachusetts.
Benjamin LaGuer was an American convicted criminal serving a life sentence in Massachusetts for rape. He did not acknowledge the crime for which he was convicted, claiming innocence. His case achieved prominence in the late 1980s when reporting by John King discovered a juror who said that other members of the all-white-male jury uttered racist slurs before and during deliberations. His case became a flashpoint in the 2006 race for Massachusetts Governor when it was revealed that Deval Patrick, the Democratic candidate, had corresponded with and supported the inmate over a period of several years. He died in a Massachusetts prison hospital of liver disease aged 57.
G. Joseph Tauro was the chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1970 to 1976.
Martha B. Sosman was an American lawyer and jurist from Massachusetts. Appointed by Governor Paul Cellucci, she served as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 2000 until her death.

He was nominated for Chief Justice by Governor Deval Patrick on November 4, 2010, and sworn in on December 20. He retired from service on the court on July 25, 2014.

On April 4, 2011, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick nominated her to that position and she was confirmed by the Governor's Council on May 4, 2011. She took the oath of office on June 8, 2011.
