Robert Meza is an American politician from Phoenix,Arizona who served as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from District 30 from 2019 to 2023. He previously served in the Arizona State Senate from 2011 to 2019,and also served four prior terms in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011. [1]
Before studying at the University of Notre Dame,Meza attended Bourgade Catholic High School in Phoenix. After graduating from the university,Meza spent seven years in the banking industry,where he worked on small and commercial loans.
A Democrat,he represented the reliably Democratic 30th legislative district which covers parts of central and west Phoenix and part of Glendale,Arizona. He was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2002 and won re-election in 2004,2006 and 2008. Term limits prevented him from seeking a fifth House term in 2010,he ran unopposed for the district's Arizona State Senate seat. [2] Meza has won ten consecutive elections since beginning his political career.
While serving in the Arizona House of Representatives and in his first term in the Arizona State Senate,Meza represented the 14th Legislative District. Meza began serving the 30th Legislative District following the 2012 election. This was due to redistricting based on results from the 2010 Census.
In the 2017–2018 legislative biennium,he served on three committees:Commerce and Public Safety,Government,and Senate Ethics.
Meza currently serves on the boards of the Anti-Defamation League and the Phoenix Theatre,where he worked as a teenager.
He is openly gay,and was the first openly gay Hispanic legislator in the nation. [3] Meza served alongside two other openly LGBT legislators:Rep. Daniel Hernández Jr.,D-Tucson and Rep. César Chávez,D-Phoenix.
In October 2017,on National Coming Out Day,the four lawmakers announced the creation of a new LGBTQ Caucus in the legislature. [4]
Meza is Jewish,becoming so after converting from Catholicism. [5]
Meza was unopposed in the Democratic primary. He defeated Republican John Lyon in the general election with 66% of the vote. [6]

Mark Steven Ferrandino is a former legislator in the U.S. state of Colorado and former Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives. Appointed to the legislature in 2007,Ferrandino represented House District 2,encompassing south central Denver from 2012 to 2014. He is the first openly gay male legislator in Colorado history. He did not seek re-election in 2014,and was the chief financial officer of Denver Public Schools. On November 19,2020,Colorado Governor Jared Polis appointed Ferrandino to serve as executive director of the Colorado Department of Revenue. He served in the position until July 2023,when the governor named him director of the Office of State Planning and Budgeting.
Marko Sakari Liias is an American politician serving as a member of the Washington State Senate,representing the 21st district since 2014. The district,located entirely within Snohomish County,includes portions of Lynnwood and Everett,as well as his hometown of Mukilteo and his native Edmonds. Brian Kendall Sims is an American politician,activist and attorney. A Democrat,he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 182nd district from 2013 until 2022. Sims is also a lawyer and advocate for LGBT civil rights. Sims became the first openly gay elected state legislator in Pennsylvania history. He won re-election on November 6,2018. He was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in 2022,finishing in second place behind Austin Davis with 25% of the vote. Since leaving public office in 2022,Sims served as the Managing Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Out Leadership,on the Board of Trustees of the Tyler Clementi Foundation,and as CEO of Agenda PAC.
Daniel Hernández Jr. is an American politician and former member of the Arizona House of Representatives. A member of the Arizona Democratic Party,he served alongside Rosanna Gabaldón in Legislative District 2. Hernández interned for U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords and was present when she was shot during a 2011 constituent meeting. He has been credited with helping to save Giffords's life after the incident.
