Robert Philip Goldman (born 1942) [2] is the William and Catherine Magistretti Distinguished Professor of Sanskrit at the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California,Berkeley. [3] [4] [5] He is also the winner of the Sanskrit Award for 2017 by the Indian Council on Cultural Relations (ICCR) [1] as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since April 1996. Goldman was born in 1942. He went to the Columbia College and obtained the A.B. degree in 1964. He also received Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. [7]
Goldman is notable for his English translation of the Rāmāyaṇa published by Princeton University Press [1] in 7 volumes between 1990 and 2019. His co-translators on the work included Sheldon I. Pollock, [8] Rosalind Lefeber, [9] Barend A. van Nooten, [10] and Sally J. Sutherland Goldman. [10]
The Rāmāyana is a Sanskrit epic from ancient India. Ramayana is one of the two Itihasas of Hinduism,the other being the Mahābhārata.

It is identified with a territory roughly equivalent to the Bastar division in the Chhattisgarh state in the central-east part of India. Depending on the methods of counting,as many as three hundred versions of the Indian Hindu epic poem,the Ramayana,are known to exist. The oldest version is generally recognized to be the Sanskrit version attributed to the sage Narada,the Mula Ramayana. Virādha is minor character from the Aranya Kanda of the Ramayana. He is a rakshasa living in Dandaka forest who briefly kidnaps Sita in an episode that has been described as "strongly [prefiguring Sita's] later abduction by Ravana,the central event of the book and the pivotal event of the epic." Rama and Lakshmana begin to battle the monster,but though they shoot it with many arrows,the arrows pass straight through him and leave him unharmed.
The monster reveals that he has a boon from Brahma which makes him invincible to weapons. So the brothers kill the rakshasa by first breaking his arms,then burying him alive in a grave. When the monsters arms are broken,he begins to praise the brothers for liberating him:he had,in a previous life,been a celestial being named Tumburu,and had been cursed by Kubera to live as a fearsome monster until he be killed by Rama. The brothers bury him,and he apparently goes back to his former celestial abode.

In the Hindu epic Ramayana,Nila,also spelled as Neela,is a vanara chieftain in the army of Rama,the prince of Ayodhya and avatar of the god Vishnu. He is the commander-in-chief of the monkey army under the monkey king Sugriva and is described as leading the army in Rama's battle against the rakshasa king Ravana of Lanka and as killing many rakshasas.
