Robert Steven Nelsen (born January 21,1952) is an American academic administrator,who served as the eighth President of California State University,Sacramento from July 1,2015 to July 16,2023. [1]
On November 2,2022,Nelsen announced his impending retirement as President of California State University,Sacramento [2] and the CSU Board of Trustees subsequently announced their search for the ninth President of the University by the Trustees Committee for the Selection of the President chaired by Diego Arambula. [3]
Nelsen was born in Brigham City,Utah and raised in Madison County,Montana. He earned a bachelor 1978 and master's degree in political science 1979 from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D from the University of Chicago 1989,specializing in modern literature,modern philosophy,and modern political theory. [4]
Prior to becoming president of CSUS,he was serving as special adviser to the University of Texas System's Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. [5] Nelsen served as the eighth President of the University of Texas–Pan American from January 2010 to August 2014. [6] [7]
Prior to this,Nelsen was an associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of English at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.
Earlier,Nelsen was a faculty member at the University of Texas at Dallas. He served as the speaker of the Faculty and chaired the University of Texas System Faculty Advisory Council. After winning the Chancellor’s Council Award for Outstanding Teaching, [8] he was recruited into the Provost's Office and served as vice provost there.
Nelsen is an author of fiction in journals which include the Story Quarterly , Other Voices , Chariton Review ,and Southwest Review .

The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA) was a public university in Edinburg,Texas. Founded in 1927,it was a component institution of the University of Texas System. The university served the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas with baccalaureate,master's,and doctoral degrees. The Carnegie Foundation classified UTPA as a "doctoral research university". From the institution's founding until it was merged into the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV),it grew from 200 students to over 20,000,making UTPA the 10th-largest university in Texas. The majority of these students were natives of the Rio Grande Valley. UTPA also operated an Upper Level Studies Center in Rio Grande City,Starr County,Texas. UTRGV Baseball Stadium,originally Edinburg Stadium,is a stadium in Edinburg,Texas,United States. It is primarily used for baseball and is the home of the UTRGV Vaqueros of college baseball. It was also the home to the Edinburg Roadrunners of the Texas–Louisiana League/Central Baseball League/United League Baseball. The Roadrunners disbanded before the 2014 season. The stadium,which opened in 2001,holds 4,000 people,expandable to 14,000-16,000 for concerts and other special events. It includes a 17.8' x 13.6' diamondvision scoreboard and luxury boxes.

Alexander Gonzalez was the 11th president of California State University,Sacramento,serving from July 1st,2003 to June 30th,2015,after having held administrative positions at two other California State University campuses. His academic career began in 1983 as a professor of psychology at California State University,Fresno for four years,followed by three years chairing that department,one as assistant to the president,and culminating in six years as the university's provost. He was named Interim President of California State University,San Marcos on June 25th,1997 as the California State University Board of Trustees rushed to respond to the sudden announcement of that institution's founding president's intention to depart only eight days earlier. Gonzalez was eventually rewarded with a permanent appointment to the position more than a year later after an exhaustive search of potential candidates,with the trustees saying "he earned it the old-fashioned way–through dedication and hard work."

The Texas–Pan American Broncs were the varsity athletic teams representing University of Texas–Pan American in Edinburg,Texas in intercollegiate athletics. The university sponsored 15 teams including men and women's basketball,cross country,golf,tennis,and track and field;soccer and volleyball for women only;and baseball for men only. The last varsity sport to be established for the Broncs was women's soccer,added for the 2014 season,with men's soccer added in 2015,the year that the merger took place. The Broncs compete in the NCAA Division I and are currently members of the Western Athletic Conference.
The UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team,or the UTRGV Vaqueros,is the varsity intercollegiate baseball team of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley,an NCAA Division I institution with several campuses in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas,United States. UTRGV was formally founded in 2013 with the announced merger of the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA),with its main campus in Edinburg,and the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) in Brownsville,with the merged university beginning operation in the 2015–16 school year. The Vaqueros compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC),play home games at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg,and are coached by Derek Matlock.
The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is a public research university with multiple campuses throughout the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. It is the southernmost member of the University of Texas System. The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 after the consolidation of the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas–Pan American.
The University of Texas at Brownsville was an educational institution located in Brownsville,Texas. The university was on the land once occupied by Fort Brown. It was a member of the University of Texas System. The institution was formed from a 1991 partnership between the two-year Texas Southmost College and University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville. The partnership ended in 2011 as UTB became a standalone University of Texas institution,and Texas Southmost College returned to being an independent community college. UTB itself offered baccalaureate and graduate degrees in liberal arts,sciences,education,business,and professional programs.

UTRGV Fieldhouse is a 2,500-seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg,Texas. It was built in 1969 for one of UTRGV's predecessor institutions,Pan American University,which later became the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA),and is home to the UTRGV Vaqueros men's and women's basketball teams,as well as the Vaqueros women's volleyball team. The Fieldhouse is also used extensively by the Department of Health and Kinesiology.
Juliet Villarreal García is an American academic administrator. When she was named president of Texas Southmost College (TSC) in 1986,she became the first Mexican-American female to head a U.S. college or university. After TSC merged with a four-year university in 1991,she served as president of the resulting University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB-TSC),then was president of the University of Texas at Brownsville when it became a separate institution.
