The NHK Trophy is an international, senior-level figure skating competition held as part of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. Organized by the Japanese Skating Federation, it began in 1979 and was added to the Grand Prix series in 1995, the series' inaugural year. Medals are awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.
Tomáš Verner is a former Czech figure skater. He is the 2008 European champion, a medalist at two other European Championships, and a ten-time Czech national champion. He has won six senior Grand Prix medals, including the 2010 Cup of Russia title.

Adam Richard Rippon is an American figure skater. He won the 2010 Four Continents Championships and the 2016 U.S. National Championships. Earlier in his career, he won the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships, the 2007–2008 Junior Grand Prix Final, and the 2008 U.S junior national title. Rippon was selected to represent the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Merano Cup is an annual figure skating competition held in Merano, Italy. Inaugurated in 1997, it is typically held around November. Medals are awarded in the disciplines of men's and ladies' singles on the senior, junior, and novice levels. It was held as a club competition in its early years.
Saulius Ambrulevičius is a Lithuanian ice dancer. As a single skater, he is the 2007 and 2008 Lithuanian national champion. Competing in ice dancing with Taylor Tran, he is the 2015 Pavel Roman Memorial silver medalist and 2015 Lithuanian national champion. They qualified to the free dance at the 2017 European Championships.
Taylor Toth is an American pair skater. He is best known for his partnership with Felicia Zhang from 2009 to 2011. Together, they won the junior title at the 2010 U.S. Championships and placed ninth at the 2010 World Junior Championships.

During this season, elite skaters competed on the ISU Championship level at the 2012 European, Four Continents, World Junior, and World Championships. They also competed in elite events such as the Grand Prix series and Junior Grand Prix series, culminating in the Grand Prix Final.
