Robert U. Griffin is an American jazz trombonist and an assistant professor of music at Florida A&M University. As a musician,Griffin performed with jazz,rock and funk bands at shows and festivals across the United States and at French and Italian jazz festivals. At FAMU,professor Griffin has served as the director of the Marching "100" Trombones as well as the school's Trombone Choir,Jazz Ensemble II and Jazz Combo. [1] [2]
Griffin studied at Florida A&M University,where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in music education. Later,Griffin earned a Master of Science degree in music education and Master of Arts in jazz performance from the University of South Florida under his mentor and professor Tom Brantley.
Griffin has been both a band leader and the arranger for the USF Jazz Bone Band and USF's Jazz Ensemble II. Griffin has served as a sideman for numerous artists,including Ben Jaffe.
David Nathaniel Baker Jr. was an American jazz composer,conductor,and musician from Indianapolis,as well as a professor of jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Baker is best known as an educator and founder of the jazz studies program. From 1991 to 2012,he was conductor and musical and artistic director for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has more than 65 recordings,70 books,and 400 articles to his credit.
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU),commonly known as Florida A&M,is a public historically black land-grant university in Tallahassee,Florida. Founded in 1887,It is the third largest historically black university in the United States by enrollment and the only public historically black university in Florida. West Virginia State University (WVSU) is a public historically black,land-grant university in Institute,West Virginia. The Elder Conservatorium of Music,also known as "The Con",is Australia's senior academy of music and is located in the centre of Adelaide,the capital of South Australia. It is named in honour of its benefactor,Sir Thomas Elder (1818–1897). Dating in its earliest form from 1883,it has a history in professional training for musical performance,musical composition,research in all fields of music,and music education. The Elder Conservatorium of Music and its forerunners have been parts of the University of Adelaide since the early 1880s. The current Director is Professor Anna Goldsworthy.
John Marcellus is a trombone musician and teacher. He was Professor of Trombone at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester,and past Chair of the Woodwind,Brass,and Percussion Department. In addition to his trombone teaching responsibilities at Eastman,Dr. Marcellus was the conductor of the Eastman Trombone Choir,Eastman Bionic Bones,and the trombonist with the Eastman Brass. Dr. Marcellus joined the faculty of the Eastman School in 1978,and was named the Kilbourn Professor from 1982 to 1983. He succeeded the trombonist and teacher,Emory Remington,who served as Professor of Trombone at Eastman close to 50 years. Professor Marcellus retired in 2014 after 36 years at Eastman.

James H. Ammons is an American educator,who is the Chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans. He served as president of Florida A&M University (FAMU) from July 2,2007,until his resignation took effect on July 16,2012. He is a native Floridian who grew up in the heart of Florida's citrus belt. He graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1970 and entered Florida A&M University on the Thirteen College Curriculum Program during the fall semester of 1970. Ammons was appointed Chancellor at Southern University in New Orleans January 8,2021.
Steve Sample Sr. was a bandleader,arranger,composer and jazz educator. For more than 30 years,Sample was a professor in the Music Department of the University of Alabama,where he directed the Jazz Ensembles and taught music theory,arranging and jazz related courses. Sample trained many notable jazz musicians during his long tenure at Alabama,including Gary Wheat,Birch Johnson,Kelley O'Neal,Chris Gordon,Mervyn Warren,Cedric Dent,Beth Gottlieb,Mart Avant,Dick Aven and Ray Reach. He was respected by his peers as one of the finest jazz educators in the United States. On September 26,2008,Sample was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame for his contributions to jazz education.
The University of North Florida School of Music is the music department of the University of North Florida,and one of the institution's flagship programs. Part of UNF's College of Arts and Sciences,it offers seven programs of study,the most noted of which is the jazz studies program,founded by the jazz euphonium player Rich Matteson in 1987. The University of California Jazz Ensembles,also known as the UC Jazz Ensembles,UC Jazz,or UCJE,is the student jazz organization founded in 1967 on the University of California,Berkeley,campus. Founded in 1967,it comprises one or more big bands,numerous jazz combos,a vocal jazz ensemble,an alumni big band,and instructional classes. With a mission statement to foster a community for the performance,study,and promotion of jazz at U.C. Berkeley,its Wednesday Night big band provides free concerts every Thursday noon on Lower Sproul Plaza,its various units perform throughout the San Francisco Bay Area including area high schools,travel to collegiate jazz festivals,and perform overseas,and for many years it sponsored the annual Pacific Coast Jazz Festival. It also provides master classes by its instructors and clinics by prominent guest artists. It has nurtured numerous musicians who have become professional jazz musicians and educators. UC Jazz Ensembles is one of three groups,with the Cal (marching) Band and UC Choral Ensembles,forming Student Musical Activities (SMA),a department within Cal Performances on the U.C. Berkeley campus. Its members are primarily U.C. Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students,representing many academic disciplines.
Out Of The Bluffs is a 2009 compact disc by the University of Memphis Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra recorded in the studio. This was their 2nd CD release since 2007. Since the late 1960s this group has been consistently recognized as one of the top collegiate jazz ensembles in the country recently being invited to the 2011 Jazz Education Network Convention,the 2000 International Association for Jazz Education Convention,and touring Europe in 1998. Musicians from this CD and program won the 2007 University of South Florida Michael Brecker Arranging Competition and others went on to study with Bob Brookmeyer at the New England Conservatory of Music,Manhattan School of Music,and also work professionally at universities and major symphony orchestras.
Steve Wiest(néJohn Stephen Wiest;born 1957) is an American trombonist,composer,arranger,big band director,music educator at the collegiate level,jazz clinician,author,and illustrator/cartoonist. From 1981 to 1985,he was a featured trombonist and arranger with the Maynard Ferguson Band. Wiest is in his eleventh year as Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Commercial Music at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music. He is the Coordinator of the 21st Century Music Initiative at the school. Wiest has been a professor for thirty-six of the forty-four years that he has been a professional trombonist,composer,and arranger. From 2007 to 2014,Wiest was Associate Professor of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas College of Music and,from March 2009 to August 2014,he was director of the One O'Clock Lab Band and coordinator of the Lab Band program. At North Texas,Wiest also taught conducting,trombone,and oversaw The U-Tubes —the College of Music's jazz trombone band. Wiest is a three-time Grammy nominee —individually in 2008 for Best instrumental Arrangement and in 2010 for Best Instrumental Composition,and collaboratively in 2010 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album,which he directed. As of 2013,Wiest has in excess of 58 arrangements and compositions to his credit,which include 10 original compositions from his current project (see 2013–2014 project below).
