Lieutenant General Sir Robert Jeremy "Robin" Ross, KCB , OBE (born 28 November 1939) is a former Royal Marines officer who served as Commandant General Royal Marines from 1994 to 1996.
Educated at Wellington College and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, Ross joined the Royal Marines in 1957. [1] He became Commanding Officer of 40 Commando in 1979, commander of 3 Commando Brigade in 1986 and Commander, Training and Reserves in 1988. [2] He was appointed Commander, Commando Forces in 1990 and led an Anglo-Dutch Force that took part in Operation Safe Haven, a humanitarian operation to protect the Kurdish people in Northern Iraq in 1991. [2] [3] [4] He became Commandant General Royal Marines in 1994, and retired in 1996. [1]
Upon retirement Ross became Chairman of SSAFA Forces Help, [5] a member of the International Investment Council of South Africa, [3] and a churchwarden of St John the Baptist Church at Berwick St John in Wiltshire. [6]
In 1965 Ross married Sara Curtis; they have one son and one daughter. [1]
Operation Provide Comfort and Provide Comfort II were military operations initiated by the United States and other Coalition nations of the Persian Gulf War, starting in April 1991, to defend Kurdish refugees fleeing their homes in northern Iraq in the aftermath of the Gulf War, and to deliver humanitarian aid to them. The no-fly zone instituted to help bring this about would become one of the main factors allowing the development of the autonomous Kurdistan Region.
3 Commando Brigade, previously called the 3rd Special Service Brigade, is a commando formation of the British Armed Forces. It is composed of Royal Marine Commandos and commando qualified personnel from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

After retirement from military service he went into private business and, in 2007, became CEO of Hewlett Packard's defence and security business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In 2010 he was appointed chairman of McKinney Rogers International and subsequently, in 2011, Albany Associates.
40 Commando RM is a battalion-sized formation of the British Royal Marines and subordinate unit within 3 Commando Brigade, the principal Commando formation, under the Operational Command of Commander in Chief Fleet. Their barracks are at Norton Manor Camp, Norton Fitzwarren near Taunton in Somerset.

Major General Matthew John Holmes, was a British senior Royal Marines officer who served for more than three decades in the armed forces. After studying economics at the University of Exeter, he joined the Royal Marines and undertook early tours of duty to Norway, the Far East, Northern Ireland and Zimbabwe. After being deployed to Kosovo and Afghanistan, he commanded 42 Commando Royal Marines from 2006 to 2008 and was awarded a Distinguished Service Order for his leadership in Afghanistan, as well as the United States Legion of Merit for his exceptionally meritorious service. Holmes served as Commandant General Royal Marines from 2019 to 2021.
