Rodolphe Alexandre (born 26 September 1953 in Cayenne) is a French politician from French Guiana. [1] The former Mayor of Cayenne,he was president of the Guiana Assembly,the deliberative assembly of French Guiana,since its establishment on 1 January 2016, [2] until 2021. [3]
He was president of the Regional Council of French Guiana from 26 March 2010,till the Regional Council and General Council were replaced by the one body,the Guiana Assembly,on 1 January 2016.
Having completed his secondary education at Felix Eboue High School,he obtained a Master of history and geography at the University of Bordeaux III. [4]
He joined the Guianese Socialist Party (PSG) in 1983,when he became chief of staff in the General Council of Guyana (until 1988).

The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the French overseas department and region of French Guiana. The first five cases were found on 4 March and the first death was announced on 20 April 2020. On 30 April,the territory was green listed,because the pandemic appeared to be under control except for Saint-Georges. In June,the virus started circulating all over the territory.
Regional elections were held in France on 20 June and 27 June 2021. At stake were the regional councils in metropolitan and overseas France including the Corsican Assembly,Assembly of French Guiana and Assembly of Martinique,all for a six-year term. The Departmental Council of Mayotte,which also exercises the powers of a region,also participated in this election,because the departmental elections were held at the same time. Eighteen regional presidencies were at stake,with thirteen in mainland France and Corsica,as well as five overseas. Though they do not have legislative autonomy,these territorial collectivities manage sizable budgets. Moreover,regional elections are often perceived as a mid-term opinion poll. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,the regional and departmental elections were postponed,first to 13 and 20 June 2021 and then to 20 and 27 June 2021.
