Roger Melanson is a former Canadian politician who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the 2010 provincial election,and Leader of the Opposition. He represented the electoral district of Dieppe as a member of the Liberals.
He is a graduate of the Universitéde Moncton with a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. He served as general manager of the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Dieppe,New Brunswick and as a business executive. He and his wife Lise Babin have two children. [1]
On October 7,2014,Melanson was appointed to the Executive Council of New Brunswick as Minister of Finance,and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. [2]
On September 6,2017,in a cabinet shuffle,Melanson was named Minister of Treasury Board and Post-Secondary Education. [3] From October 5,2018 to November 9,2018 Melanson served as Minister of Energy and Resource Development. He was re-elected in the 2020 provincial election.
On September 28,2020 he was chosen as interim leader of the opposition Liberal party of New Brunswick,replacing Kevin Vickers who had resigned following the provincial election of September 14. [4]
He remained interim leader until August 2022, [5] when Susan Holt won a party leadership election in which Melanson was not a candidate.
On October 13,2022,Melanson announced that he would be departing from provincial politics after 12 years,on October 21,2022. [6]

On December 28,2018,he announced that he would be stepping down effective the next Liberal caucus meeting,in February 2019,when an interim leader was chosen. As the Progressive Conservatives are leading a minority government,a leadership election was to be held quickly so that a new leader can be in place in case there is an early general election. The deadline for candidates to file was March 29,2019. Following the withdrawal of RenéEphestion,Kevin Vickers was the only candidate for the position. The party's executive board declared Vickers to be acclaimed on April 16,2019. He assumed the leadership officially on April 24,2019.

Vickers resignation followed the outcome of the 2020 New Brunswick general election which saw the Progressive Conservative party,under Blaine Higgs,form a majority government and the Liberal Party lose three seats. The deadline for candidates to file their intention to run for the leadership was June 15,2022. Voting by party members for the leadership occurred at a free in-person convention as well as remotely via phone and internet connected device and used a ranked ballot system.
Susan Holt is a Canadian politician,who has served as the 35th premier of New Brunswick since November 2,2024,and has been the leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Association since August 6,2022. She has served as the MLA for Fredericton South-Silverwood since 2024. Previously,she was the MLA for Bathurst East-Nepisiguit-Saint-Isidore and as the leader of the Opposition from 2023 to 2024. She is the first woman to become premier of New Brunswick.
