Charles Odilon Roger Rousseau,CC (6 February 1921 –26 September 1986) was a Canadian ambassador,administrator and soldier. He was head of the Montreal Olympic Organizing Committee (COJO) for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II,but became a prisoner of war in 1942 until the war's end. [1]
He was born in Trois-Pistoles,Quebec and died of cancer in Ottawa,Ontario. [2]
The 1976 Summer Olympics,officially known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad and commonly known as Montreal 1976,were an international multi-sport event held from July 17 to August 1,1976,in Montreal,Quebec,Canada. Montreal was awarded the rights to the 1976 Games at the 69th IOC Session in Amsterdam on May 12,1970,over the bids of Moscow and Los Angeles. It was the first and,so far,only Summer Olympic Games to be held in Canada. Toronto hosted the 1976 Summer Paralympics the same year as the Montreal Olympics,which still remains the only Summer Paralympics to be held in Canada. Calgary and Vancouver later hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1988 and 2010,respectively.
Jean Drapeau was mayor of Montreal,Canada from 1954 to 1957 and 1960 to 1986. Major accomplishments of the Drapeau Administration include the development of the Montreal Metro entirely underground mass transit subway system running on 'whisper quiet' rubber wheels,a successful international exposition Expo 67 as well as the construction of a major performing arts centre,the Place des Arts. Drapeau also secured the hosting of the 1976 Summer Olympics and was instrumental in building the Olympic Stadium and then world's tallest inclined tower. The men's long jump event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal,Quebec,Canada,had an entry list of 33 competitors from 25 nations,with two qualifying groups before the final (12) took place on Thursday July 29,1976. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The top twelve and ties,and all those reaching 7.80 metres advanced to the final. The qualification round was held in Wednesday July 28,1976. The event was won by Arnie Robinson of the United States,the nation's third consecutive and 16th overall gold medal in the men's long jump. Randy Williams took silver,but the chance of an American sweep was eliminated when Larry Myricks broke his foot warming up for the final. Robinson and Williams became the fifth and sixth men to earn two medals in the event. Frank Wartenberg of East Germany took bronze.
