Rokoko is a Danish brand of consumer motion capture and animation technology products. It was founded in 2015 in Copenhagen, Denmark with additional offices located in Athens, Greece, and San Francisco, USA.[ citation needed ] It manufactures the Smartsuit Pro, an IMU motion capture suit used by animators, game developers, vTubers. [1] [2]
Rokoko was founded by Jakob Balslev, Matias Søndergaard, and Anders Klok in March 2014, however the idea came to them when they were at the National Film School of Denmark. [3] Initially, they launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Smartsuit Pro. The motion capture technology, unveiled in December 2016, uses a wireless body suit and integrates with software development platforms. [4] The company also produces the Smartgloves for finger tracking, as well as software for face tracking. [5]
Smartsuit Pro II, the next generation of Smartsuit Pro, was announced in 2021. [6]
In 2024, Rokoko was sued in a California State Court action under Case No. 25CHSC00490. Rokoko removed the case to be heard in Federal Court under Case No. 2:25-cv-05340-ODW-RAO. The suit [7] against Rokoko alleges using forensic evidence, an international scheme to harvest motion capture data from its users to resell to third parties. Rokoko's Terms of Use page [8] seem to corroborate Rokoko's intent to do so. The suit also alleges intentional bricking of hardware, failure to deliver adequate support, parts, or repairs, and refusal to comply with California's Right to Repair laws as well as false advertising, spoliation of evidence and more. The lawsuit was brought by an independent game developer who is litigating pro se against Rokoko and the law firm Reed Smith who has also come under fire with forensic allegations of unauthorized practice of law, perjury and forgery
The filing also referenced similar complaints from other users regarding hardware reliability and customer service responsiveness.
