Roman-photos(Fotonovelas) is the debut album by French rock musician Alain Bashung, released in 1977 through Barclay Records. The first issues of the album simply bore the artist's name.

Alain Bashung French singer

Alain Bashung was a French singer, songwriter and actor. In France, he is considered to be one of the most famous singers in French chanson and French rock. He rose to prominence in the early 1980s with hit songs such as "Gaby oh Gaby" and "Vertige de l'amour", and later had a string of hit records from the 1990s onward, such as "Osez Joséphine", "Ma petite entreprise" or "La nuit je mens". He has had an influence on many later French artists, and is the most awarded artist in the Victoires de la Musique history with 12 victoires obtained throughout his career.

This is a list of notable events in music that took place in the year 1977.

Production

Alain Bashung was 30 years old when he recorded this first album, even though his career was already 11 years old, as he had published several singles that were commercial failures.

French singer Daniel Balavoine, who would go on to have enormous commercial success as a pop singer in the 80s, but who was then nearly unknown, sings background vocals on the album. [1]

Daniel Balavoine French singer-songwriter

Daniel Balavoine was a French singer and songwriter. He was hugely popular in the French-speaking world, and inspired many singers in the 1980s, such as Jean-Jacques Goldman, Michel Berger, his closest friend, or the Japanese pop-rock group Crystal King; he was also a part of the original cast of the rock opera Starmania in 1978, which was written by Berger. He took part in French political life and is known for a 1980 televised verbal confrontation with then presidential candidate François Mitterrand.

The album was also released as the first side to a joint compilation with Herbert Léonard, titled 16 grands succès (16 golden hits), a rather misleading title given the fact that this album would be a commercial failure.

Herbert Léonard French singer and airplane specialist

Herbert Léonard né Hubert Lœnhard is principally known as a singer, however, he is also a specialist of Russian airplanes from World War II. His first success "Quelque chose tient mon cœur" opened the doors of the hit-parade to him in 1968.

Reception

Commercial performance

The album was a commercial failure when it was first released in 1977. After that, the album was disowned by Bashung and it was not reissued neither on vinyl nor on CD for a while. Only the track "C'est la faute à Dylan" ("It's because of Dylan") would resurface in other ways. The album was finally reissued on CD as part of the box set Les Hauts de Bashung (Bashung's Highs) in 2002.

("I voluntarily left this album out my integral, as I think it does not reflect me at all. Originally, it was to be named "Maquettes" (Demos), and after time passed, I really thought it should not have been released. I was just satisfied to have made an album, at a time when only the big names in music could afford the privilege, but I was not through thinking about what I wanted to achieve. I had things in my head, but I was still unsure about how to do it. The producers were not really ready to invest in uncommon things and, starting from there, I didn't have my place. Not yet, at least.")

Les Inrockuptibles is a French cultural magazine. Started as a monthly magazine in 1986, it became weekly in 1995. In the beginning, rock music was the magazine's primary focus, though every issue included articles on other matters, to which it tends to take a left-wing approach.
