Ronald L. Saxton (born 1954) is an American lawyer,business person,and Republican politician in Oregon. He has run twice for Governor of Oregon,losing in the 2002 primary election,and winning the Republican nomination in 2006,but losing in the general election.
Saxton was born and raised in Albany,Oregon. He graduated from Albany High School in 1972,earned a bachelor's degree from Willamette University in 1976, [1] [ full citation needed ] and a juris doctor at from University of Virginia School of Law in 1979. [1] [ full citation needed ]
Saxton helped to co-found the Ater Wynne law firm in 1990. [2] [ full citation needed ] From 1990 to 2000 he served as the chairman of the firm. [3]
In 1997,Saxton was elected to the Portland Public Schools Board serving through 2001,and served as its chair from 1998 to 2000. [1] [ full citation needed ] Saxton was also the founding president of the Portland Schools Foundation,a community-based organization that has raised over $30 million in private contributions in Oregon's largest school district. [4] [ full citation needed ] He has also chaired the Strategic Planning committee of the Cascade Pacific Council of the Boy Scouts,co-chaired the Oregon Higher Education Roundtable,and served on the board of the Saturday Academy,a science and math mentoring program for Oregon's youth. [4] [ full citation needed ]. He also served on the Oregon Education Investment Board,Oregon Business Council education committee and served as education advisor to Gov. Kitzhaber.
In 2002,Saxton unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for Governor of Oregon. He placed third in the primary behind Kevin Mannix and Jack Roberts. [5]
On March 23,2005,Saxton announced that he would again seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2006. Kevin Mannix also ran again,and State Senator Jason Atkinson ran a strong campaign as well. Saxton won the Republican primary for Governor of Oregon on May 16,2006 with 43% of the vote,versus Mannix's 30% and Atkinson's 22%. On November 7,2006,Saxton was defeated by Democratic incumbent Ted Kulongoski.
In 2010,Saxton was appointed to Democratic governor John Kitzhaber's transition team,focusing on educational issues. His wife was selected as well to focus on early childhood issues. [6] [7]
Following the election,Saxton announced he was unlikely to run for political office again. [8] In 2007,he joined global door and window manufacturer Jeld-Wen as an executive,eventually serving as EVP,Chief Administrative Officer and a member of the Board. [9] Saxton left Jeld-Wen in 2014 to return to private practice as a partner with Schwabe,Williamson &Wyatt in Portland and in 2015 joined Pacific Northwest healthcare system PeaceHealth as EVP and General Counsel. He retired from PeaceHealth in 2023.
More recently,he has served on the Oregon Educational Investment Board and a board member and Board Chair at Oregon Public Broadcasting. Saxton serviced on a variety of business civic boards including National Association of Manufacturers,Oregon Business Council and Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems. He has served on several corporate boards of directors including JELD-WEN,Swift Energy,Parr Lumber,Columbia Forest Products,WellRithms,Repatriate Medical Supplies,and Oregon Freeze Dry. [9]
Saxton is married to Lynne Hume Saxton,also a fourth generation Oregonian,and together they have one son,Andy. The Saxton family are adherents to the Presbyterian faith.[ citation needed ]
Theodore Ralph Kulongoski is an American politician,judge,and lawyer who served as the 36th Governor of Oregon from 2003 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party,he served in both houses of the Oregon Legislative Assembly and also served as the state Insurance Commissioner. He was the Attorney General of Oregon from 1993 to 1997 and a justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1997 to 2001. Kulongoski has served in all three branches of the Oregon state government.
John Albert Kitzhaber is an American former politician and physician who served as the 35th and 37th governor of Oregon from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2015. In February 2015,shortly after beginning his fourth term,Kitzhaber resigned from office and was replaced by Secretary of State Kate Brown. A member of the Democratic Party,Kitzhaber was the longest-serving governor in the state's history.

The 2006 Oregon gubernatorial election took place on November 7,2006. Incumbent Democratic Governor of Oregon Ted Kulongoski ran for a second and final term as governor. Kulongoski faced several challengers in his primary,whom he dispatched to win his party's nomination a second time,while Republican nominee Ron Saxton,the former Chair of the Portland Public Schools Board and a candidate for governor in 2002 emerged from a crowded primary. Kulongoski and Saxton were initially going to be challenged in the general election by State Senator Ben Westlund,but Westlund withdrew his candidacy before the general election. There were multiple independent and third party challengers on the ballot as well. In a hard-fought campaign,Kulongoski won re-election by a surprisingly wide margin,winning his second term as governor.

Walker is known as an advocate for utility customers and as an outspoken critic of influential former Governor Neil Goldschmidt.

Jason Atkinson is an American politician in the US state of Oregon. The Republican grew up in the Southern Oregon city of Ashland. He served as a senator in the Oregon State Senate from 2001 to 2013. He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for Governor of Oregon in 2006. He stated his intention to run in the 2010 Oregon gubernatorial election,but withdrew from the race in 2009.

He was elected in 2006 to the Oregon House of Representatives,representing the state's 46th District,which covers portions of southeast and northeast Portland. He won re-election in 2008 and 2010. In 2011,he resigned to become the Education Policy Advisor to Governor John Kitzhaber. In 2013,he was appointed to lead Oregon's new Higher Education Coordinating Commission.

Atkinson was established by Willamette in 1974 and has an enrollment of approximately 312 students.

Richardson was from Central Point,Oregon and served six terms in the Oregon House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party. He represented House District 4,which included portions of Jackson and Josephine counties,and was the Republican nominee for Governor of Oregon in the 2014 election,losing to incumbent Democrat John Kitzhaber.

The 2002 Oregon gubernatorial election took place on November 5,2002. Incumbent Democrat John Kitzhaber was barred by term limits from seeking a third consecutive term;he later successfully ran again in 2010 and 2014. To replace him,former Oregon Supreme Court Associate Justice Ted Kulongoski won a crowded and competitive Democratic primary,while former State Representative Kevin Mannix emerged from an equally competitive Republican primary. The campaign between Kulongoski and Mannix,who were joined by Libertarian nominee Tom Cox,was close and went down to the wire. Ultimately,Kulongoski eked out a narrow margin of victory over Mannix,which was slightly smaller than Cox's total vote share,allowing Kulongoski to win what would be the first of two terms as governor. As of 2024,this is the last time that Oregon voted for a gubernatorial nominee and a U.S. Senate nominee of different political parties.
