A Republican, he served in Texas's 7th congressional district in large portions of western Houston and surrounding Harris County. In his 2018 re-election campaign, he was defeated by Democrat Lizzie Fletcher. He subsequently began work as a lobbyist.
John Harris Whitmire is an American attorney and politician who is the 63rd mayor of Houston, Texas, the most populous city in Texas. A member of the Democratic Party, Whitmire was a member of the Texas State Senate from 1983 to 2023, representing District 15, which included much of northern Houston.

The 2022 Texas lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 2022, to elect the lieutenant governor of the state of Texas. The election coincided with various other federal and state elections, including for governor of Texas. Primary elections were held on March 1, with runoffs being held on May 24 for instances in which no candidate received a majority of the initial vote. Texas is one of 21 states that elects its lieutenant governor separately from its governor.
