Ronald Michael "Pop" Warner (born December 2,1968) is an American professional baseball coach and former minor league manager who is the third base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball (MLB). His professional career began in 1991 and its entirety has been spent in the Cardinals' organization.
Warner was selected in the 17th round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft after graduating from the University of Wyoming. During his pro playing career (1991–1999) he played every infield position (although he was primarily a shortstop and second baseman) as well as corner outfield positions,and even pitched in three games. He threw and batted right-handed,stood 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall and weighed 185 pounds (84 kg). His career peaked at Triple-A with 307 games played between 1997 and 1999 with the Louisville and Memphis Redbirds. In 792 minor league games,he rang up 594 hits,including 40 home runs,and batted .267. [1]
In 2000,Warner retired as a player and spent the season as the batting practice pitcher for the Major League Cardinals. After working as a minor league coach from 2001 to 2002,he received his first managerial assignment in 2003 in the Rookie-level Appalachian League. He was a minor league coach again in 2004,then resumed his managerial career in the Cardinal farm system in 2005,progressing from Class A (Palm Beach Cardinals) in 2005–2006 to Double-A (Springfield Cardinals) from 2007 to 2011. [2] He was named manager of the Memphis Redbirds on November 21,2011. On December 10,2014,Warner was named the Cardinals' roving minor league infield coordinator and was replaced as manager of the Redbirds by Mike Shildt. [3] Through eleven seasons as a manager,Warner has compiled a record of 734–730 (.501). [2]
Midway through the 2017 season,the Cardinals promoted Warner to the big league staff in a general coaching role. He returned to the minors for the following season but became the Cardinals' bench coach on July 14,2018,after manager Mike Matheny was fired and current bench coach Shildt was named interim manager. [4] For the 2019 season,Warner became third base coach.
The Memphis Redbirds are a Minor League Baseball team of the International League and the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They are located in Memphis,Tennessee,and are named for their Major League Baseball affiliate. The Redbirds play their home games at AutoZone Park,which opened in 2000 and is located in Downtown Memphis. The team previously played at Tim McCarver Stadium in 1998 and 1999.
Miguel Jesús Cairo [ki'-row],is a Venezuelan former professional baseball infielder and currently the bench coach for the Washington Nationals. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for nine different clubs in a 17-year career,spanning from 1996 to 2012. During his playing days,Cairo stood 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall and weighed 225 pounds (102 kg) while batting and throwing right-handed. While primarily a second baseman,Cairo was able to play all the infield positions and as a corner outfielder. He was also used for pinch-hitting duties late in his career. He was interim manager for the White Sox in the latter part of the 2022 season as manager Tony La Russa stepped away due to health concerns.
Richard Keith "Stubby" Clapp is a Canadian professional baseball coach and former second baseman and Triple-A manager who is the first base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for 11 years,most notably within the Cardinals organization,including a brief stint in MLB with the Cardinals. In his native Canada,he is best remembered for his performance at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg,where he hit a bases-loaded single in the 11th inning to beat a more experienced U.S. team and put Canada in the semifinals. Canada eventually won the bronze medal.
Michael Scott Matheny is an American former professional baseball player and former manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played in MLB for 13 seasons as a catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers,Toronto Blue Jays,St. Louis Cardinals,and San Francisco Giants. Matheny later spent seven seasons as the manager of the Cardinals. One of the most accomplished defensive players of his era,he won four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. As manager,Matheny's teams won one National League (NL) pennant and three NL Central division titles.
JoséManuel Oquendo Contreras,nicknamed "the Secret Weapon",is a Puerto Rican former infielder and current coach in Major League Baseball (MLB). He currently serves as Minor League Infield Coordinator of the St. Louis Cardinals,an organization with whom he has been affiliated since 1985. He managed the Puerto Rico national team in the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics. During his playing career,Oquendo proved highly versatile defensively:he played primarily second base and shortstop,but also frequently in the outfield,and made at least one appearance at every position during his MLB playing career. Oquendo has the second-highest career fielding percentage for second basemen at .9919 (99.19%),behind only Plácido Polanco's career mark of .9927 (99.27%).
