Ross McLaren (born 24 October 1991) is an English actor. McLaren began his career performing in various stage productions, including Big the Musical and Guys and Dolls . Then in 2021, he was cast in the role of Luca McIntyre on the BBC soap opera Doctors . For his role as Luca, he was nominated at award ceremonies including the National Television Awards, the RTS Midlands Awards and the British Soap Awards. In 2022, McLaren took a break from the soap to appear in a touring production of Singin' in the Rain , returning afterwards.

Life and career

McLaren was born on 24 October 1991 in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. [1] [2] McLaren studied at the Joyce Mason School of Dance, as well as the Millennium Theatre Arts School. [3] After graduating, he appeared in 42nd Street at the Curve in Leicester. [4] He then appeared in a touring production of Annie through New Zealand, [5] and starred in a production of Singin' in the Rain at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, in the role of Sid Phillips. [6] McLaren is married to fellow actress Hannah McIver, whom he met in a stage production of It Happened in Key West in 2018. [7] [8] That same year, McLaren co-founded head shot photography company Yellowbelly. [9]

In February 2021, it was announced that he had joined the regular cast of the BBC daytime soap opera Doctors as nurse Luca McIntyre. [10] His debut appearance aired on 24 February 2021. [11] For his portrayal of the role, he was longlisted for the Newcomer award at the 26th National Television Awards, [12] as well as being nominated for the British Soap Award for Best Newcomer. [13] In 2022, he starred in a touring production of Singin' in the Rain, this time in the role of Cosmo Brown. [14] He took a break from his role in Doctors to appear in the tour, with his management confirming that he would reprise his role as Luca following the completion of the tour. [15] He returned to Doctors and appeared continuously until November 2024, when the series ended. [16]

Doctors is a British medical soap opera, first broadcast on BBC One on 26 March 2000, and concluded on 14 November 2024. Filmed in Birmingham and set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff of both an NHS doctor's surgery and a university campus surgery, as well as the lives of their families and friends. Initially, only 41 episodes of the programme were ordered, but due to the positive reception, the BBC ordered it as a continuing soap opera. Doctors was filmed at the Pebble Mill Studios until 2004; production then relocated to the BBC Drama Village, where it filmed until 2024. Episodes are filmed three months prior to transmission. The show was typically broadcast Mondays to Thursdays at 2:00 pm on BBC One, as well as having classic episodes broadcast on Drama. It took three annual transmission breaks across the year: at Easter, during the summer and at Christmas.

Luca is introduced to the series on 24 February 2021 following the departure of nurse Ayesha Lee the year prior. McLaren's acting credits confirmed that he had been contracted as a series regular on the soap. McLaren felt thrilled to be cast on Doctors and has described Luca as a cheeky and lovely character who would "go the extra mile" to help a patient. Luca's introduction sees him feature in a standalone centric episode that explores his background, including experiencing homophobia in his former workplace and suffering a car accident that ends the life of his boyfriend Billy Parker. His background also involves a religious upbringing and a bad relationship with his mother, and later scenes in the series reveal that Luca is HIV-positive, which he initially receives a negative response to from patients of the Mill Health Centre.

Jessamy Helen Stoddart is an English actress. She is known for taking over the role of Liberty Savage in the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, having portrayed the role since 2018. Prior to joining the soap, Stoddart appeared in numerous theatre productions, including Legally Blonde, Mack and Mabel, Follies and Songs for a New World.
