Rosy Pereira (born 1951, in Jakarta) is an Indonesian-Dutch pop singer. She is the daughter of steel guitarist Coy Pereira. She released singles in the 1960s under her name as well as Babe Pereira. In the mid to late 1970s she was the other half of the duo Rosy & Andres who had a hit with "My Love".

Background

Rosy Pereira is the youngest of three children and comes from a musical family. Her father Coy Pereira was a well known steel guitarist. [1] [2] He was a member of The Kilima Hawaiians, [2] [3] and had recorded with the Mena Moeria Minstrels. [4] Her brother Richard was the lead guitarist in a band called The Thunderbolts. [5] She has two children, Sharkira born in 1982 and Romana born in 1983. [6]

Career

Pereira's family arrived in February 1960 in the Netherlands, when Rosy was 8 years old. In 1965 she and her brother Richard formed a group called Objection. Later she sang with the Bobby Setter band. When she was eighteen years old while in Paris, she recorded her first single "Serenade To Summertime" which was produced by José Bartell and Jean-Claude Petit. [6] This was recorded under the name of Babe Pereira. The B side of the single, "Can't You See" [7] is of interest to Freakbeat and Northern Soul collectors. [8] It also appears on the various artists compilation, Waiting For A Break In the Clouds 16 rare gems of soulful pop-sike and groovy psych 1968 - 1973. [9]

She would record two more singles as Babe Pereira, one in 1969 "Someone, Somewhere" bw "Paperboy" and "If You Believe In Love" bw "Try" in 1971. [7]

In 1972, she appeared in the film De laatse dagen van Isaak aka The Last Good Days of Isaac that starred Charles Cornette, Hilde Uitterlinden and Rik van Uffelen. [10]

In the mid-1970s she was in a duo with Andres Holten. They had a top ten hit in 1976 with "My Love" which reached no.3 on the Billboard Dutch chart. [11]

In 1979, she was part of a trio called Bonnie, Debbie & Rosy who released a single called "Oh Boy" which was written and produced by Peter Koelewijn. [12] In addition to herself, the trio included Bonnie St. Claire and Debbie aka Ria Schildmeyer. [13] [14]

In 1985, the single "Darling" bw " I Feel Like Dancing" was released. [15] In 1994, she recorded a single with Jay Uitterlinden which was released under Rosy & Jay. [6]

"Everything I Own" is a song written by David Gates. It was originally recorded by Gates's rock band Bread for their 1972 album Baby I'm-a Want You. The original reached No. 5 on the American Billboard Hot 100. Billboard ranked it as the No. 52 song for 1972. "Everything I Own" also reached No. 5 in Canada.

Dries Holten Dutch singer and songwriter (1936–2020)

Dries (Andres) Holten was a Dutch singer, songwriter of Indo descent. He represented the Netherlands at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest alongside Sandra Reemer. After he and Reemer broke up, Holten formed a new group with Rosy Pereira and called it Rosy & Andres. In 1980, Holten's final group was of him and Ria Shield Meyer.

Debbie (singer)

Debbie, pseudonym of Ria Schildmeyer is a Dutch singer. She was also part of a trio called Bonnie, Debbie & Rosy.

Rudi Wairata aka Rudy Wairata(1929/1930 –1981) was an influential Indonesian musician who had fronted the Mena Moeria Minstrels and the Amboina Serenaders. Wairata's style of playing was influenced by Sol Hoʻopiʻi and Andy Iona. Along with George de Fretes he was a prominent musician in the genre of Hawaiian steel guitar music. His song "Rock'n Roll Breezes" may be the first Indo-rock song.

Wanda de Fretes is a singer and recording artist who was popular in the Netherlands in the 1960s. She is also the daughter of legendary Moluccan steel guitarist George de Fretes and singer Joyce Aubrey. In addition to her solo efforts, she also recorded with her mother as the duo Wanda & Joyce. Besides singing pop and rock'n roll, she also sang traditional Indonesian and Malayan songs.

Joyce Aubrey was a singer and recording artist who was popular in the Netherlands in the 1960s as part of the duo Wanda & Joyce. She is also the mother of singer Wanda de Fretes as well as the ex-wife of legendary steel guitarist George de Fretes. In addition to her solo efforts, she also recorded with George de Fretes and the Amboina Serenaders, a popular Netherlands based band whose members included Ming Luhulima and Rudi Wairata. Some of their songs did well in Germany as well.

The Mena Moeria Minstrels were a popular Netherlands based Hawaiian music group. They were made up of mainly Moluccans from the former Dutch East Indies colony. The group was originally led by steel guitarist Rudi Wairata and also featured Joyce Aubrey and Ming Luhulima. They were prolific in their output releasing at least twenty singles in the 1950s.

Omega is a Dutch record label that released records under Omega and its sub label Omega International from the 1940s though to the 1990s. The distribution was handled by Dureco. In Belgium, its releases were handled by Fonior. Some of the artists to have their work released on the label in the early 1960s include The Dutch Cocktail Trio. In the 1970s, Omega pushed out MOR music and also artists from non English speaking European countries such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

Coy Pereira (1919-2005) was a Netherlands based guitarist and steel guitarist originally from Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. He was a member of the Kilima Hawaiians and had recorded with the Mena Moeria Minstrels as well as having work released under his own name. He is said to be in the same class of fellow steel guitarists, George de Fretes and Rudi Wairata.

Rosy & Andres were a Dutch musical duo made up of Rosy Pereira and Dries Holten. They recorded together from the mid to late 1970s. Their best known song is "My Love".

My Love was a top ten hit for Netherlands-based pop duo Rosy & Andres in 1976.

The Kilima Hawaiians were a well known and popular Dutch Hawaiian music group who had a hit with "Er hangt een Paardenhoofdstel aan de Muur" / "Es hängt ein Pferdehalfter an der Wand". Some of the steel guitarists that played with them were Rudi Wairata, Coy Pereira and Frans Doolaard.
