The Rotterdam Public Transport Museum (Dutch : Rotterdams Openbaar Vervoer Museum) is a transport museum in the Dutch city of Rotterdam and is located in a former tram depot. The museum was founded in 1997, although the depot was built in 1923 and its collection dates back to as far as 1880. [1] [2] The museum's collection consists of dozens of historic trams, several buses and two metro trains. The museum is run entirely by volunteers and is only open to visitors for a few days each year.
There are approximately 50 historical Rotterdam trams in total, varying in the year of construction between 1905 and 1986, including the two-axle trams, four-axle trams, allan trams, schindlers trams, Düwag trams and ZGT-carriages. Some of these have the status of museum trams, others have a function for group transport, instruction vehicles or work vehicles. The museum also owns two metro carriages (type M and type T). These are only used as museum objects and can no longer be used on the metro network. The Rotterdam Public Transport Museum also owns several buses from various public transport companies.
In addition to (rail) vehicles, the museum also has a collection of historical photos, tickets, caps, wire cutters, signs, posters, money changers and everything else that has to do with historical public transport in Rotterdam. Various merchandise such as postcards, refrigerator magnets and books are for sale in the museum shop.
The museum is run entirely by more than 150 volunteers who keep the museum running through various activities.
One of the tasks of the Rotterdam Public Transport Museum is to manage and maintain all of the RET's historical rolling stock. This mainly concerns restoration and keeping the rolling stock running. The depot on the Kootsekade is where work is done on the trams and metros. The depot on the Sluisjesdijk is where the maintenance of the historical buses takes place. The work is done by volunteers. The costs for maintenance are financed from municipal subsidies, donations, rental trips and entrance fees.
In spring and summer and part of autumn, the historic trams run through the city centre of Rotterdam on weekends, and sometimes on Thursdays and Fridays, under the name Citytour Line 10. The trams run a fixed route through the city centre and Delfshaven, with Willemsplein as their fixed starting and ending point. Tourists can ride along for a fee and receive information about the various sights they pass along the way like the Euromast and Cube house. Line 10 works according to the 'Hop-On Hop-Off principle' that can be found in many cities worldwide. However, line 10 uses historic trams instead of modern buses.
Outside the museum days, companies, organisations, individuals etc. can rent historical trams and buses for a tour. Also (a part of) the museum can be rented for an event. The proceeds are used for the management and maintenance of the collection.
The Rotterdam Public Transport Museum works together with the RET where necessary. For example, the historic trams are used to tow away modern trams after a derailment or traffic accident. The museum's trams are also used to clear the tram track of snow and spread salt.
A trackless train — or tram, road train, land train, or parking lot train is a road-going articulated vehicle used for the transport of passengers, comprising a driving vehicle pulling one or more carriages connected by drawbar couplings, in the manner of a road-going railway train. Similar vehicles may be used for transport of freight or baggage for short distances, such as at a factory or airport. Often depending on use, land train may or may not be skeuomorphically styled to look like traditional, often steam trains.
Heritage streetcars or heritage trams are a part of the efforts to preserve rail transit heritage. In addition to preserving street-running rail vehicles, heritage streetcar operations can include upkeep of historic rail infrastructure. Working heritage streetcars are closely related to the growing global heritage railway movement and form a part of the living history of rail transport.
Budapesti Közlekedési Zrt. or BKV Zrt. is the main public transport operator in Budapest, Hungary. BKV was established in 1968 as a unified public transport company with the merger of the companies responsible for the different means of transport; bus operator FAÜ, tram and trolleybus operator FVV, suburban railway operator BHÉV and riverboat operator FHV. The metro was added in 1973. The transport in Budapest underwent another reorganization in 2010 when the BKK was founded for the management of the city transport and infrastructure.
The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) is a transport and technology museum located in Western Springs, Auckland, New Zealand. It is located close to the Western Springs Stadium, Auckland Zoo and the Western Springs Park. The museum has large collections of civilian and military aircraft and other land transport vehicles. An ongoing programme is in place to restore and conserve items in the collections. This work is largely managed by volunteers but, since the passing of the Museum of Transport and Technology Act in 2000, has been supported by full-time professional museum staff. New public programmes and facilities now promote the collections.
RandstadRail is a tram-train network in the Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area in the west of the Netherlands that is jointly operated by HTM Personenvervoer (HTM) and Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram (RET). It connects the cities of Rotterdam, The Hague and Zoetermeer, primarily using former train and existing tram tracks.
Trams in Saint Petersburg are a major mode of public transit in the city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Saint Petersburg once had the second-largest tram network in the world, consisting of about 340 kilometres (210 mi) of unduplicated track in the late 1980s. However, since 1995 the tramway network has declined sharply in size as major portions of track were removed, particularly in the city centre. Saint Petersburg lost its record to Melbourne, Australia. While it still had 285 kilometres (177 mi) of length in 2002, by early 2007 the tram network's had declined to just over 220 kilometres (140 mi), and by the 2010s operated on just 205.5 kilometres (127.7 mi) of network.

Valley Heights Steam Tram Rolling Stock is a heritage-listed collection of tramway machinery at 17b Tusculum Road, Valley Heights, City of Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1889 to 1891. The property is owned by Steam Tram and Railway Preservation (Co-op) Society. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 21 October 2016.
The Vienna Transport Museum "Remise", formerly the Viennese Tram Museum, is a museum in Vienna, Austria, run by Wiener Linien and dedicated to public transport. It is the largest tram museum dedicated to the public transit vehicles of a single city.
