The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) is a tertiary public hospital located in Herston, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is operated by Metro North Health, part of the Queensland Health network. [2] The hospital has 929 beds, and it is estimated that 65% of the patients served come from within 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) of the hospital. [1] It is the second largest hospital in Australia, and is a major teaching and research hospital. [3] [4]
The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital is located in the broader the Herston Health Precinct, which includes other facilities such as the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS).
The main building of the Bowen Hospital as it was initially known, was designed by Charles Tiffin and others. [5] For a time it was also known as Brisbane General Hospital. In the 19th century the hospital dealt with some severe cases of tropical diseases due to Queensland's predominantly tropical climate. [5]
The hospital was created by the merging of the Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital in 2003. [6] The women's hospital was demolished first, in 1998, to make way for the new building, after which the acute hospital was demolished. In the same year the hospital precinct was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. [7]
In January 2008, there was a public health scare over concerns about lead levels at the hospital. Concerns were dismissed by Queensland Health after air and surface swabs carried out found lead levels were safely below recommended standards. [8]
In February 2008, the hospital was hit with an outbreak of an antibiotic resistant bug, Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus or VRE. The hospital closed two 30-bed wards to new admissions in early December after 21 patients tested positive to VRE, while staff contained spread of the bacteria. [9]

The Northern Busway is a bus-only road running north from the Brisbane central business district to the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital in Queensland, Australia. The QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute is an Australian medical research institute located in Herston, Brisbane, in the state of Queensland. QIMR was established in 1945 by the Government of Queensland through the enactment of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Act 1945 (Qld). Previously known as the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR), the original purpose of the institute was to further the study of tropical diseases in North Queensland. The current director is Professor Fabienne Mackay. The institute is a registered charity. In 2021, the institute was named as one of the Queensland Greats by the Queensland Government.
Herston busway station is located in Brisbane, Australia serving the suburb of Herston. It opened on 14 December 2005 as RCH Herston on an existing section of the Inner Northern Busway. It was the northernmost station until the busway was extended to RBWH on 3 August 2009.

Lady Bowen Hospital is a heritage-listed former maternity hospital and now social housing and office complex at 497–535 Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by John H. Buckeridge and built from 1889 to 1890 by John Quinn. It was also known as Brisbane Lying-In Hospital and the Lady Bowen Hostel. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 April 1999. The complex consists of the former hospital and nurses' quarters buildings; a third building which had been contained in the heritage listing was demolished c. 2005–2008.
Victoria Park, also known by its Turrbal name of Barrambin, is a heritage-listed park located in Spring Hill and Herston in Brisbane, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 3 December 2007. The site was formerly a public golf course that opened in November 1931, before it was converted back to a park in June 2021 as part of redevelopment works.

It was built from 1896 to 1939. It includes the Lady Lamington Nurses' Home and Nurses' Homes Blocks 1 & 2. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.
Brisbane General Hospital Precinct is a heritage-listed hospital precinct at 40 Bowen Bridge Road, Herston, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1875 to 1941. It includes six historic buildings associated with the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and the former Royal Children's Hospital, as well as aspects of their grounds and landscaping. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 March 2003. A number of buildings in the precinct, in particular the Lady Lamington Nurses Home, will be redeveloped as part of the Herston Quarter development.
The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) was a hospital for children in Herston, Brisbane, Australia. RCH was located next to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital before it was demolished and the land was used to build the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS).
Metro North Hospital and Health Service, known as Metro North HHS or as Metro North Health, is the most populous public health district in Queensland and the overarching health service for the statewide tertiary facility, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The service operates several hospitals, dental facilities, and community health services in Brisbane and the surrounds, including the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital, and covers the area north of the Brisbane River through to Kilcoy.
