The Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) is a learned society and a professional body for navigation. [1] The RIN was founded in 1947 as a forum for mariners, pilots, engineers and academics to compare their experiences and exchange information. [2] Today it is a leading centre for promoting knowledge in navigation and its associated sciences, including positioning, timing, tracking and conduct of a journey, whether on, in, over or under land, sea, air or space. The institute has members in over 50 countries worldwide.
The organisation was formed in 1947 as the Institute of Navigation and was patterned after the US Institute of Navigation. Both organisations had been influenced by the role navigation had helped in moving troops and supplies during Second World War. Emerging technology such as radar and LORAN increased in the years following the war. The institute sought to provide a forum where academics, engineers, mariners, and pilots could learn, exchange information, and share personal experiences.
The institute's founding membership included several notable professionals in the field. From the field of astronomy Sir Harold Spencer Jones, the Astronomer-Royal was the first president. The first two vice-presidents represented the field of aviation in Air Chief Marshal Sir John Slessor (Deputy Chief of the Air Staff) and the development of radar in Sir Robert Watson-Watt. Marine navigation was represented by Michael Richey who became the first executive secretary from 1947 to 1982. [3] In 1948, Richey would found the institute's official academic publication, the Journal of Navigation and edit the journal until 1986. [4] [5] Sir Robert Watson-Watt would become the second president of the institute. [6]
The institute expanded its focus in the 1950s and 1960s to also address issues of safety and began collaborating with similar organizations in Europe. In 1972, at its 25th anniversary, its work was recognized by Her Majesty the Queen and it became entitled to the "Royal" prefix and was renamed the Royal Institute of Navigation. Some of the presidents of the institute during this time included Donald Sadler (the astronomer and mathematician) who was president from 1953 to 1955, Rear Admiral Edmund George Irving who was president from 1964 to 1967 and Rear Admiral George Stephen Ritchie who was president from 1970 to 1972. [6]
More recently, the institute has broadened its activities to include significant developments in the understanding and applications of cognitive navigation, human factors and animal navigation. The institute also fulfills an important role in the provision of guidance information for practical navigators including private pilots and small boat mariners.
From 2005 to 2008, the president of the institute was Professor J D Last, a consultant engineer and expert in communications systems who subsequently died at sea in a plane crash in November 2019. [7] [8] Roger McKinlay, an engineer was president from 2013 to 2015 and in 2015 said that increasing dependence on technology means people were losing their ability to find their way by traditional methods, specifically stating society was "sedated by software". [9] [10] In 2015, McKinlay was replaced by Captain J B Taylor OBE, who was elected president until 2018. [11]
From 2018 to 2021, the president of the RIN was Terry Moore, a positioning and navigation expert at the University of Nottingham. [12] While President, Moore focused on expanding awareness of issues relating to positioning, navigation and timing (PNT), in particular stating that "Reliable position and timing are strategically important resources and that having control over them is important in the same way as having secure energy supplies." [13] In 2021, Cynthia Robertson, an RYA Yachtmaster Examiner and Fellow of the society was elected as the first female president of the institute. [14]
In 2022, the institute hosted its Waves of Navigation exhibition in London as part of its commemorations to mark its 75th anniversary. This include a 75th Anniversary Reception at St James’s Palace hosted by the Princess Royal. [15]
The institute is a UK-registered charity [16] [17] with a Royal Charter. The charity registration is 1117254.
The institute is governed by its board of trustees called the council, which is chaired by its president. The members of council and the president are elected from the institute's membership and serve for up to a three-year term.
The institute has four specialist committees to advise the council: the technical committee, audit and risk committee, membership and fellowship committee, and the remuneration committee.
Membership is available to anyone in the world with an interest in navigation or its associated sciences. There are five categories of individual membership:
The institute also offers a number of plans tailored to corporate bodies including businesses, clubs and universities.
Through being a professional affiliate [18] of the UK's Engineering Council (EngC), the institute offers professional registration to the Engineering Council's registers in the following three categories of professional engineers and technicians:
Any member of the institute who can demonstrate professional competence and commitment is able to apply for professional registration through the RIN. It is expected that registered members are committed to maintaining their professional standard through ongoing continuous professional development.
The institute hosts a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) catering for members' interests in specific areas; all SIGs are organised and run from within the institute's membership.
The institute's active SIGs are the Small Craft Group, Cognition and Navigation Group, Animal Navigation Group, General Aviation Navigation Group, History of Navigation Group, Professional Marine Navigation Group, Civil and Military Aviation Group, and the Younger Members' Group.
The institute sponsors conferences, publications, and reports related to navigation and its associated sciences. The institute may publish position papers or white papers in relation to current navigation-related developments.
In 2017 its international conference included contemporary topics as artificial intelligence, cyber threats, and machine learning. [19] It also co-sponsored a report to the UK government on the economic impact of a 5-day loss of geopositioning systems. [20]
In 2019, the institute launched an online 'Resilient positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) Portal. [21]
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the institute's activities transitioned to virtual events. [22]
In November 2021, the institute held its 2021 Conference in Edinburgh at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre in a hybrid physical and virtual format. [12] [23] HRH The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) attended via Zoom. [12]
In November 2022, the institute held a Leadership Seminar on PNT. [24]

The institute houses the Cundall Library of Navigation at its offices in London. The Cundall Library of Navigation, the UK's leading navigation-specific library of books and resources, from which members may borrow, is also open to the public.

Galileo is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) created by the European Union through the European Space Agency (ESA) and operated by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA). It is headquartered in Prague, Czechia, with two ground operations centres in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, and in Fucino, Italy,. The €10 billion project went live in 2016. It is named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei.
Loran-C is a hyperbolic radio navigation system that allows a receiver to determine its position by listening to low frequency radio signals that are transmitted by fixed land-based radio beacons. Loran-C combined two different techniques to provide a signal that was both long-range and highly accurate, features that had been incompatible. Its disadvantage was the expense of the equipment needed to interpret the signals, which meant that Loran-C was used primarily by militaries after it was introduced in 1957.
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is an independent professional association for civil engineers and a charitable body in the United Kingdom. Based in London, ICE has over 92,000 members, of whom three-quarters are located in the UK, while the rest are located in more than 150 other countries. The ICE aims to support the civil engineering profession by offering professional qualification, promoting education, maintaining professional ethics, and liaising with industry, academia and government. Under its commercial arm, it delivers training, recruitment, publishing and contract services. As a professional body, ICE aims to support and promote professional learning, managing professional ethics and safeguarding the status of engineers, and representing the interests of the profession in dealings with government, etc. It sets standards for membership of the body; works with industry and academia to progress engineering standards and advises on education and training curricula.
The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System is a satellite-based radio navigation system owned and operated by the China National Space Administration. It provides geolocation and time information to a BDS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more BDS satellites. It does not require the user to transmit any data and operates independently of any telephonic or Internet reception, though these technologies can enhance the usefulness of the BDS positioning information; however, concerns have been raised about embedded malware leaking information in this way.

A satellite navigation or satnav system is a system that uses satellites to provide autonomous geopositioning. A satellite navigation system with global coverage is termed global navigation satellite system (GNSS). As of 2024, four global systems are operational: the United States's Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), and the European Union's Galileo.

The IET was formed in 2006 from two separate institutions: the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), dating back to 1871, and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) dating back to 1884. Bradford Parkinson is an American engineer and inventor, retired United States Air Force Colonel and Emeritus Professor at Stanford University. He is best known as the lead architect, advocate and developer, with early contributions from Ivan Getting and Roger Easton, of the Air Force NAVSTAR program, better known as Global Positioning System.
The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is the professional body for general (medical) practitioners in the United Kingdom. The RCGP represents and supports GPs on key issues including licensing, education, training, research and clinical standards. It is the largest of the medical royal colleges, with over 54,000 members. The RCGP was founded in 1952 in London, England and is a registered charity. Locata Corporation is a privately held technology company headquartered in Canberra, Australia, with a fully owned subsidiary in Las Vegas, Nevada. Locata has invented a local positioning system that can either replace or augment Global Positioning System (GPS) signals when they are blocked, jammed or unreliable. Government, commercial and other organizations use Locata to determine accurate positioning as a local backup to GPS.
Inside GNSS (IG) is an international controlled circulation trade magazine and website owned by Gibbons Media and Research LLC. It covers space-based positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) technology for engineers, designers, and policy-makers of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). In the United States, GNSS is identified mainly with the government-operated Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS). InsideGNSS.com is the complimentary website of online news, events, digital newsletters, and webinars, and archived magazine articles.
GPS Block IIIF, or GPS III Follow On (GPS IIIF), is the second set of GPS Block III satellites, consisting of up to 22 space vehicles. The United States Air Force began the GPS Block IIIF acquisition effort in 2016. On 14 September 2018, a manufacturing contract with options worth up to $7.2 billion was awarded to Lockheed Martin. The 22 satellites in Block IIIF are projected to start launching in 2027, with launches estimated to last through at least 2037.
Washington Yotto Ochieng is a Kenyan-born British academic who is Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. Previously, he was Head of the Centre for Transport Studies and Co-Director of the Institute for Security Science and Technology(ISST) together with Deeph Chana. Ochieng is a Senior Security Science Fellow in ISST. He also serves as Director of the Engineering Geomatics Group and Chair of Positioning and Navigation Systems.
The United Kingdom Global Navigation Satellite System was a United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) research programme which, between May 2018 and September 2020, developed outline proposals for a United Kingdom (UK) owned and operated conventional satellite navigation system, as a British alternative to the European Union (EU) owned and operated Galileo Global Navigation Satellite System. The main reason was to provide a national and independent system, to ensure UK security following its withdrawal from the EU as a result of Brexit. It was fully supported by the Ministry of Defence.
Dorota A. Grejner-Brzezińska is a Polish-American geodetic engineer known for her work on the Global Positioning System. She is University Distinguished Professor and Lowber B. Strange Endowed Chair in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering at Ohio State University, and director of the Satellite Positioning and Inertial Navigation at Ohio State, where she was also the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering and senior associate vice president for research of the university. She current serves as Vice President of the Office of Knowledge Enterprise, part of Ohio State University's Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge.
Frank Stephen Tromp van Diggelen is a Distinguished Engineer at Google. His work concerns GPS/GNSS navigation. He helped to create some of the first GPS chips used in commercial smartphones. Van Diggelen is a fellow of the IEEE, Institute of Navigation and Royal Institute of Navigation.
