History
The publication of Max Havelaar, written by a Dutch-Indonesian who saw firsthand the suffering of the Dutch colonial subjects in the plantations, started widespread interest in Europe to help improve the conditions of the colonies abroad including educational contributions. Recognizing the absence of a Catholic school system in Indonesia, four priests were dispatched to Indonesia: Bruder Engelbertus Cranen, Bruder Felix, Bruder Anthonius and Bruder Stanislaus.
Upon arrival in Surabaya, they established their first school in 1862 by the name of "St. Yusuf". In 1905, the expanded group on priests established "St. Hilarius" in Jakarta. Shortly after, they also established schools in Semarang, Madiun, and several other cities in Java. Finally in 1930 they established a monastery in Bandung on Jalan Sultan Agung, the present location of the school. In 1948 the priests established the St. Yusuf Primary School, and St. Aloysius Secondary Schools.
Initially a Jesuit all-boys school, the school is currently run by a non-profit Catholic charity instead of by the monastery, and has been co-educational since the early 1980s.
Recent years
During the leadership of former head of the charity Fr. van Ipperen, St. Aloysius saw a period of rapid expansion in the 1980s and 1990s, both in terms of admissions and facilities. It has campuses on Jalan Sultan Agung no.4 near the Dago area of Bandung, in the Sukajadi area north of the city center, and in Batununggal a newly established suburb in south of Bandung. It also owns a retreat/recreational center in Gambung, some distance away from the city, to support its non-academic life experiences programs. It boasts athletic facilities such as soccer fields, swimming pools, basketball and volleyball courts, baseball fields; in addition to laboratory facilities for computer engineering, electrical engineering, biological and physical sciences. The school hosts extracurricular clubs including SAMANTA (Outdoor Activities Club),TOP Drum & Bugle Corps (marching band club), Choir Club, TCC or TOP Computer Club, Science Club, Taekwondo Club, Wushu club, The Scout, KPM or Korps Palang Merah(Red-Cross Corps), Baseball and Softball team, Basketball team, ALPHA (Aloysius Photography) Club, and Paskibra/ Pasukan Pengibar Bendera (flag-ceremony team).
On 12 June 2011, IATOP and the school hold a mass cycling events attended by 500 participants, which then form the cycling community named TOP Cycle.
Surabaya is the capital city of the Indonesian province of East Java and the second-largest city in Indonesia, after Jakarta. Located on the northeastern corner of Java island, on the Madura Strait, it is one of the earliest port cities in Southeast Asia. According to the National Development Planning Agency, Surabaya is one of the four main central cities of Indonesia, alongside Jakarta, Medan, and Makassar. The city had a population of 2,874,314 within its city limits at the 2020 census and 9.9 million in the extended Surabaya metropolitan area, making it the second-largest metropolitan area in Indonesia. The official estimate as at mid 2022 was 2,987,863.
Bandung is the capital city of West Java province of Indonesia. Located on the island of Java, Greater Bandung is the country's second-largest and most populous metropolitan area, with over 11 million inhabitants. Situated 768 meters above sea level, the highest point in the North area with an altitude of 1,050 meters and the lowest in the South is 675 meters above sea level, approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Jakarta, Bandung has cooler year-round temperatures than most other Indonesian cities. The city lies on a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains that provide a natural defence system, which was the primary reason for the Dutch East Indies government's plan to move the capital from Batavia to Bandung.
Medan is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of North Sumatra. The nearby Strait of Malacca, Port of Belawan, and Kualanamu International Airport make Medan a regional hub and multicultural metropolis, acting as a financial centre for Sumatra and a gateway to the western part of Indonesia. About 60% of the economy in North Sumatra is backed by trading, agriculture, and processing industries, including exports from its 4 million acres of palm oil plantations. The National Development Planning Agency listed Medan as one of the four main central cities in Indonesia, alongside Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar.
Pekanbaru is the capital city of the Indonesian province of Riau, and a major economic centre on the eastern side of Sumatra Island with its name derived from the Malay words for 'new market' . It has an area of 632.26 km2 (244.12 sq mi), with a population of 897,767 at the 2010 Census, and 983,356 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,007,540. It is located on the banks of the Siak River, which flows into the Strait of Malacca, Pekanbaru has direct access to the busy strait and has long been known as a trading port.
Sultan Anyakrakusuma is known as Sultan Agung was the third Sultan of Mataram in Central Java ruling from 1613 to 1645. He was a skilled soldier who conquered neighbouring states and expanded and consolidated his kingdom to its greatest territorial and military power.
AirlanggaUniversity is the second-oldest university in Indonesia and also a public university located in Surabaya, East Java. Despite being officially established by Indonesian Government Regulation in 1954, Universitas Airlangga was first founded in 1948 as a distant branch of the University of Indonesia, with roots dating back to 1913. It started with a medical school and school of dentistry. Now Universitas Airlangga hosts 16 faculties with more than 35,000 students and 1,570 faculty members. Universitas Airlangga has university hospitals for the faculties of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, and Dentistry, as well as a tropical infection hospital for its Institute of Tropical Disease. The university is also equipped with biosafety level three facilities.
St. Ursula Catholic School or Sekolah Menengah Katolik Santa Ursula is an all-female Catholic school located in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is located next to Jakarta Cathedral and Filateli Post Office. The school has a branch in BSD, Tangerang. After its initial establishment as an Ursuline Convent in 1859, the Ursulines established the Prinses Juliana School in Batavia in 1912. At present, the school is known as St. Ursula Catholic School.

Frans Johan Louwrens Ghijsels was a Dutch architect and urban planner who worked in the Netherlands and the Dutch Indies. Ghijsels was the founder of AIA, the biggest architecture consultant in the Dutch Indies. He was one of the instrumental architects in developing a modern style characteristic of the Dutch Indies.

St. Louis 1 is particularly well known for its history, achievements and notable alumni.
