Same-sex marriage has been legal in Newfoundland and Labrador since December 21,2004,when the province was ordered by the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples. This decision followed similar cases in seven other provinces and territories,and pre-dated by seven months the federal Civil Marriage Act of 2005,which legalised same-sex marriage throughout Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador was the eighth jurisdiction in Canada and the eleventh in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.

Liberty Counsel was founded in 1989 by its chairman Mathew Staver and its president Anita L. Staver,who are attorneys and married to each other. The Southern Poverty Law Center has listed Liberty Counsel as an anti-LGBT hate group,a designation the group has disputed. The group is a Christian ministry.

Harry R. Jackson Jr. was an American Christian pastor,Pentecostal bishop,and author who served as the senior pastor at Hope Christian Church in Beltsville,Maryland,and served as the presiding bishop of the International Communion of Evangelical Churches. He was also a social conservative activist and commentator and was known for his opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion. Jackson was the founder and chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition,an organization of ministers who promote socially conservative causes,and was a co-founder of The Reconciled Church Initiative. Jackson died in November 2020 of unknown causes.

The World Mission Society Church of God is a new religious movement established by Ahn Sahng-hong in South Korea in 1964. The church believes that founder Ahn Sahng-hong is the Second Coming of Jesus,and that Zahng Gil-jah is God,in the form of "God the Mother". Its headquarters as well as its main church are located Sungnam City,Kyunggi Province,near Seoul. Ex-members and several experts have called it a cult. In a lawsuit seeking damages brought by a former member against the church,the court ruled that tortious conduct did not exist in this case.

Robert Pierce Shuler Sr.,also known as "Fighting Bob",was an American evangelist and political figure. His radio broadcasts from his Southern Methodist church in Los Angeles,California,during the 1920s and early 1930s attracted a large audience and also drew controversy with his attacks on politicians and police officials. In 1931,the Federal Radio Commission revoked Shuler's broadcast license due to his outspoken views. He ran for the United States Senate in 1932 on the Prohibition Party ticket and attracted more than 500,000 votes.
