History
Sacred Heart Academy's history began in 1858, when a request for teachers from the Ursuline Sisters of Germany came from Louisville, KY. Three young Ursulines answered the request, traveling to Louisville to teach German immigrant children at St. Martin's school. By 1859, the Sisters had established Ursuline Academy at the corner of Shelby and Chestnut streets. In 1864, the Sisters incorporated the Ursuline Society and Academy of Education. In the 1870s, more space was needed to accommodate the growing number of sisters, students, and boarders. The community purchased property on Workhouse Road (later known as the Lexington Road campus). In 1877, classes began in an existing farmhouse, and the Academy of the Sacred Heart opened for grades 1 through 12. In 1924, The Academy became two schools: Sacred Heart Academy, a high school for girls, and Sacred Heart Model School, a grade school for boys and girls.
The Ursulines, also known as the Order of Saint Ursula, is an enclosed religious order of women that in 1572 branched off from the Angelines, also known as the Company of Saint Ursula. The Ursulines trace their origins to the Angeline foundress Angela Merici and likewise place themselves under the patronage of Saint Ursula. While the Ursulines took up a monastic way of life under the Rule of Saint Augustine, the Angelines operate as a secular institute. The largest group within the Ursulines is the Ursulines of the Roman Union.

Atherton High School is a public school in the Highlands district of Louisville, Kentucky, United States, and is part of the Jefferson County Public School district. It opened in 1924 as J.M. Atherton High School for Girls at 1418 Morton Avenue. It is named after John McDougal Atherton, a local businessman and politician who was instrumental in changing Louisville's school system administration from trustees to a board of education. The school became coeducational in 1950.
Sacred Heart Model School, also known as SHMS, is a coeducational Catholic school for children from Junior Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. It is located in Louisville, Kentucky, and is sponsored by the Ursuline Nuns of the Immaculate Conception. Their current principal is Dr. Michael Bratcher and the president is Dr. Cynthia Crabtree. In both 2001 and 2018 Sacred Heart Model School received the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award. They have a variety of sports teams and clubs as well as an immense focus on their teachings of faith and service. On the same campus is Sacred Heart Academy (SHA), a high school for girls, Sacred Heart School for the Arts (SHSA), and Sacred Heart Preschool (SHP). The Academy of Mount St. Ursula is a Catholic girls' college preparatory school in the United States, which was founded in 1855 as a part of the Monastery of St. Ursula in the town of Morrisania. In 1892, the monastery relocated to Bedford Park Boulevard and Bainbridge Avenue, two blocks east of the Grand Concourse, in the Bronx. It is the oldest continuously operating Catholic high school for girls in the State of New York, and is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.
The Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery is a Roman Catholic congregation of women. whose motherhouse, St. Walburg Monastery, is located at Villa Madonna, in Villa Hills, Kentucky. It was founded in 1859 by three sisters of the Benedictine congregation of Mount St. Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, who came to Covington to teach the German-speaking children of St. Joseph's parish. They became an independent congregation in 1867. Villa Madonna Academy, a private, Roman Catholic K-12 school is an integral part of the sisters' ministry in Kentucky. Besides operating the Academy, the sisters taught in parish schools and staffed St. John's Orphanage.
