Sakina Masood Itoo (born 5 December 1970 [1] ) is an Indian politician affiliated to the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. She is currently the Cabinet minister for Education, Health & Medical Education and Social Welfare in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. [2] She has served as cabinet minister of erstwhile state of the Jammu and Kashmir. She has also served as minister for several departments, including Social Welfare, Ari Trainings and Public Grievances, Education, Tourism, Floriculture, Public Works, and PHE among others. She is one of the youngest members of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. She was only 26 years old when she won her first assembly election in 1996. She has won "Best MLA Award" in 2012 for her contribution to her constituency. [3]
Itoo was born to Wali Mohammad Itoo, speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on 5 December 1970 in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir. [4] She did her intermediate from the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education in 1991. [5] Later, she started her MBBS practice, professional degree in medicine, but left midway amidst her father's killing in 1994 and subsequently entered politics. [4]
During her political career, Itoo served as a minister in several departments such as deputy minister for Education in 1996, state minister for Social Welfare, and Public Works. [4] Later, she was appointed a minister of Tourism and served the department until 2002. [6] In 2002, she lost an assembly constituency election [7] and was later nominated as a member of Legislative Council by the party in 2004. [6]
During 2014 assembly election campaign, a heavily circulated video clip showed her ordering an old man to vote for her in the name of Allah. [8] [9] The video was reported as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct to the Election Commission of India by the opposition party. Omar Abdullah and the National Conference defended Itoo. [10] [11] However, she lost again in 2014 against Abdul Majid Padder of PDP, who later joined the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. [12]
In 2024 assembly elections, Sakeena won from the Damhal Hanjipora assembly constituency and defeated Gulzar Ahmad Dar of PDP by a margin of 17,449 votes. [12] On 16 October 2024, she was sworn in as the minister in the second cabinet of Omar Abdullah. [13] On 18 October 2024, following an order issued by lieutenant governor Sinha to allocate portfolios to council of ministers on the advice of chief minister, Sakeena was given the charge of Health and Medical Education, School Education, Higher Education, and Social Welfare. The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) is a regional political party in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir union territory and Ladakh. Founded as the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference by Sheikh Abdullah and Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas in 1932 in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the organisation renamed itself to National Conference in 1939 in order to represent all the people of the state. It supported the accession of the princely state to India in 1947. Prior to that, in 1941, a group led by Ghulam Abbas broke off from the National Conference and revived the old Muslim Conference. The revived Muslim Conference supported the accession of the princely state to Pakistan and led the movement for Azad Kashmir.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was an Indian politician who served as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir twice from November 2002 to November 2005 and from March 2015 until his death on January 7, 2016. He held various positions, including minister of Tourism in Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet and minister of Home Affairs in V. P. Singh's cabinet. Sayeed began his political career in the wing of the National Conference led by G. M. Sadiq, which later merged with the Indian National Congress. In 1987, he transitioned to the Janata Dal and subsequently founded the People's Democratic Party (PDP), a regional political party that remains influential in Jammu and Kashmir, currently led by his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti.
Mehbooba Mufti Sayed (Urdu: محبوبہ مفتی سید) is an Indian politician and leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP), who served as the 9th and last chief minister of the erstwhile state Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first female chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. After the revocation of Article 370 of the constitution in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.
Farooq Abdullah is an Indian politician and the current president of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. He has served as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on several occasions since 1982, and as the union minister for New and Renewable Energy between 2009 and 2014. He is the son of the 1st elected chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Sheikh Abdullah. His son is the current chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah.
Omar Abdullah is an Indian politician who is currently serving as the Chief Minister of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He had previously served as the chief minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir between 2009 and 2014, and is the current vice president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, a position he has held since 2009. Abdullah also served as a member of parliament in the Lok Sabha from 1998 to 2009, representing the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, and was a union minister of State for External Affairs.

Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami is an Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir. He belongs to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and is a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, to which he has been elected five times consecutively since 1996, representing the Kulgam Assembly Constituency.

He also served as Deputy Leader of Congress Legislative Party from 2014 to 2018 He left Congress and became founding member of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) formed on 8 March 2020.He was also the Vice President of PAC and member CWC of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Prior to Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Khan left Apni Party and decided to contest elections as Independent from Gulabgarh constituency.

Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, also known as G. M. Saroori, is an Indian politician and a former legislator of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, who represented Inderwal constituency of Kishtwar district from 2002 to 2018 until the coalition government was ended in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was held in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir from 18 September to 1 October 2024 in 3 phases to elect its 90 members. The results of the elections were announced on 8 October 2024. The INDIA alliance, consisting of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), won a majority of seats in the election, winning 49 of the 90 seats for which elections were held, with the JKNC winning the highest number of seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the largest share of the popular vote.

He won the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election representing the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party. Padder is contesting the 2024 election as the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party candidate.
