Salford Electrical Instruments Ltd (SEI; colloquially: Salford Elec) was a British manufacturer of electrical measurement and testing instruments based in Salford, England. Closely tied to the General Electric Company (GEC) conglomerate, the company was well-established in the electrical equipment industry in the United Kingdom in the 20th century.

In 1910, the meter department of GEC was incorporated separately as Salford Electrical Instruments Ltd, a subsidiary company employing 1,000 workers. Since 1905 the department had been based at Bow Street Works, a small two-storey building at the rear of GEC's large Peel Works on Silk Street. [1] [2] In around 1921 it expanded to fill the whole Peel Works, after the departure of GEC's Peel-Conner Telephone Works to Coventry, and the extension of the site to accommodate a new factory. [2] [3]

SEI's managing director, Henry Cobden Turner, is known for his work on the radio proximity fuse, an important innovation during the Second World War. [4] [5] The device was manufactured at the Salford works, and was over 90% successful in disrupting German flying bombs such as the V-1 and V-2 in mid-air, significantly reducing civilian casualties. [4] The company was also active in the development of radar technology,[ when? ] with early experiments conducted from the roof at Silk Street, tracking vehicles on nearby streets. [4]

By the 1960s, Salford Electrical Instruments was primarily focused on assembling electronic measuring instruments. After a partial floor collapse in the Silk Street factory in March 1965, [6] the company relocated to Barton Lane in Eccles, taking over the four-acre site of the former Jonex Mills. Here, the company produced electrical components such as capacitors, thermostats, telecommunications equipment, rectifiers, and potentiometers. [4] SEI also opened a factory in Heywood, Greater Manchester. At its peak, SEI employed 3,000 people over 7 factories. [7]

Decline

The Eccles factory closed in the early 1980s. The site was subsequently redeveloped into an industrial estate. [4] The company suffered from financial problems in the early 1990s, leading it to sell its magnetic materials division to Neoside Limited and its mining product business to Rowe Hankins Components Ltd in 1993, while the crystals division was sold to Plessey. [3]

On December 22, 1993, the remaining assets were transferred to GEC, and the company ceased to operate independently. In Heywood, local Member of Parliament Jim Callaghan unsuccessfully appealed to Lord Weinstock, the managing director of GEC, to retain the factory, saying its closure would result in the loss of 362 jobs. [8] In 1999 GEC merged with British Aerospace to form BAE Systems, and Salford Electrical Instruments became part of this larger entity. [3]

It also manufactured consumer products, including the UK version of the Viewmaster in the 1940s. [9]

In 1989, it was taken over by a consortium formed by GEC and Siemens which split the assets of the Plessey group.

Wingrove & Rogers Ltd of Kirkby, Liverpool, England, was formed in 1919 by Major Charles William Wingrove M.C. (1889-1976) and William Rogers (b1891) to manufacture control gear for electric vehicles. In the 1920s they diversified into variable capacitors, the components essential for tuning in the front end of radio receivers which they continued through the Second World War during which they supplied the armed forces. In 1926 they amalgamated with British Electric Vehicles Ltd, and moved the electric vehicle production from Southport to Liverpool where they made vehicles such as electrically motorised trolleys and electric locomotives, largely for use in factories, mines, and by tunnelling contractors.

William Thomas Henley (1814–1882) was a pioneer in the manufacture of telegraph cables. He was working as a porter in Cheapside in 1830, leaving after disputes with his employer, and working at the St Katherine Docks for six years. During those years he was determined to learn a trade and used money from an aunt to purchase a lathe, vice and lumber with which he made a work bench. With those tools he taught himself to turn wood and brass and began to experiment, including with electricity.

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. is a manufacturer of electric wire and optical fiber cables. Its headquarters are in Chūō-ku, Osaka, Japan. The company's shares are listed in the first section of the Tokyo, Nagoya Stock Exchanges, and the Fukuoka Stock Exchange. In the period ending March 2021, the company reported consolidated sales of US$26,5 billion.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">EKCO</span> British electrical and plastics manufacturer

EKCO was a British electronics company founded by Eric Kirkham Cole CBE in Southend-on-Sea during 1924. The company started out by making radio sets, before progressing onto television sets and lighting. The company's knowledge of radio saw it expand into developing radar before and during World War II. The company expanded into making its own plastic bodies for radio sets, with EKCO Plastics later becoming a manufacturer of domestic wares. The company merged in 1960 with Pye to become British Electronic Industries Ltd, which was purchased by Dutch firm Philips in 1967, with the EKCO brand disappearing from brown goods during the 1970s.

GEC Traction Limited was a British industrial company formed in 1972 which designed and manufactured electric traction equipment for railway rolling stock. The company had manufacturing sites at Manchester, Preston and Sheffield and was a wholly owned subsidiary of General Electric Company.

Byrom, Allen, Sedgwick and Place, also known as the Manchester Bank, was the first bank to be established in Manchester, England. It was founded on 2 December 1771 in Bank Street.

Ferguson, Pailin & Co. was an English electrical engineering company based in Higher Openshaw, Manchester. The company was established in 1913, by Samuel Ferguson and George Pailin to manufacture electrical switchgear.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sprague Electric</span>

Sprague Electric Company was an electronic component maker founded by Robert C. Sprague in 1926. Sprague was best known for making a large line of capacitors used in a wide variety of electrical and electronic in commercial, industrial and military/space applications. Other products include resistive components, magnetic components, filter assemblies, semiconductors and integrated circuits.

A roll call by police outside the firm Salford Electrical Instruments Ltd showed that none of the 500 workers was missing. About 200 work in the affected building but they were not all there at the time.
