Sally Wells is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours , played by Rowena Mohr. She debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 15 October 1987. During her time in the serial her storylines were centered on her on-screen brother Des and trying to find her biological father. Mohr left the cast after Sally was axed because she did not fit in with the direction of storytelling producers were aiming for.

Casting

The character was created as the sister of Des Clarke (Paul Keane) and a new love interest for Henry Ramsay (Craig McLachlan). [1] In September 1987 it was announced that actress Rowena Mohr had been cast as Sally. [2] Of her casting Mohr said she was nervous because the serial was in its peak popularity at the time, but the cast helped her to settle in. [3] Mohr was also given the opportunity to write scripts for Neighbours. [4]

Development

Sally is characterised by her constant need to have things her own way. She has been described as a strikingly pretty woman, catching the attention of all the other male characters, especially Henry. [5] Mohr commented during an interview that "Sally was a bit of a control freak really. I think she liked to think she was easy going but she wasn't at all and she didn't cope very well when things didn't go the way she planned." [3] She added that Sally was "good fun to play" because she is "a bit cranky at times and said what she thought." Mohr believed these character traits originated in Sally's childhood. She explained that "I think she was probably just trying to compensate for not really having any parents and having to make her own way in the world." [3] Mohr has also described Sally as "ruthless, stubborn and pig-headed but likeable. She's straightforward, really, and she gives the boys a hard time." [4] In her backstory, Sally had trained to be an aerobics and gym teacher. Mohr found it difficult because she had never done aerobics. To research the role, she joined a gym and quit smoking cigarettes. [4]

Sally's introductory story featured her arriving in Erinsborough in search of her father, Malcolm Clarke (Noel Trevarthen). Upon her arrival she learns that Des is her half-brother. [6] Their backstory is explored and they discover that Malcolm had a brief romance with Sally's mother Kate after he had abandoned Des and his mother Eileen Clarke (Myra De Groot). Malcolm repeats this behaviour and leaves Kate alone. [6] Mohr told Coral O'Connor from the Daily Mirror that Kate did not tell Malcolm she was pregnant and he does not know she exists. [4] Sally had been working at the local coffee shop and concealing her true identity. Sally hides the her gym instructor career from Des and pretends to be a cook. Mohr defended her characters actions explaining that "she comes to Erinsbrough to look for Des and Malcolm and goes about it in an underhand way because she doesn't know how she will be received." [4]

When Des discovers that Sally is trying to locate Malcolm, Mohr stated "he doesn't want to know." [4] But Sally soon locates Malcolm and convinces him to visit his estranged family. [4] Trevarthen described Malcolm as an unreliable father and loner, who is reluctant to reconnect with his family. Trevarthen told O'Connor (Daily Mirror) writer that "he is not a reliable bloke. Malcolm is a carpenter. A very ordinary bloke who wants to be alone." Malcolm does not want to visit Des either and Trevarthen concluded that he "gets pushed into it" by Sally. [4]

As a love interest of Henry, the character was at the center of romantic dramas. Writers quickly introduced Nick Carrafa to play Henry's love rival Tony Romeo. Tony soon gets involved in their new relationship leading him and Henry to have a fist fight over Sally. [7] The feud begins when Henry witnesses Tony flirting with Sally. Carrafa told Mark Foster from Neighbours Who's Who that "Henry comes over claiming that Sally is his girl and Tony and Henry end up getting into a fist-fight in front of Lassiters." [8] Tony soon realises that Henry is lying and decides to out do his rival. Carrafa added "Tony finds out Henry and Sally aren't a 'unit' and he decides to ask her out. So he's still in there with a chance." [8] Of Sally and Henry's doomed relationship Mohr stated that "I don't get to marry Henry. He's still single, so there's hope for all you girls yet." [9]

In 1988, the show's producer axed the character, with Mohr citing that she felt they didn't think Sally fitted in with new storylines they were planning. [3] She then left to pursue projects in the UK, she later revealed that she would never reprise the role. [3] Discussing Sally's departure, Mohr told a reporter from The Sentinel that "the story line for my character is that I leave for a European cruise." [10]

Storylines

Sally had been brought up in Perth by her mother Kate. She comes to Ramsay Street in search of her father, Malcolm. She finds out Des is her half-brother. Sally becomes close to Eileen. Together Des and Sally decide to track their father down. They later track him down and are surprised to find him living locally. Malcolm is happy to get to know his newfound children, they all become close.

Sally then decides to move into a flat locally and stays around. She lets Tony move in with her. Tony pretends he will marry Jane Harris (Annie Jones) when he learns his mother, Elinora (Kate Jason) is coming to town. Jane initially plays along with it, but is annoyed to learn Tony has been trying to romance Sally all along. Sally then starts dating Henry Ramsay, they get along well at first, spending much time together. Henry starts to adore her and they are smitten.

Des' wife Daphne Clarke (Elaine Smith) is killed in a car accident, Eileen has a nervous breakdown. These events begin to take their toll on Sally worrying about her newfound family. Malcolm wins tickets to travel to Europe, he asks Eileen and Sally to join him on his trip. Sally initially is not certain of what to do, but later decides it is the right thing to do. Henry is left devastated and pleads with her to stay with him but Sally leaves for her new life without Henry.

Reception

The BBC said Sally's most notable moment was "Finding out she had a brother she didn't know about – Des." [11] A reporter from the Evening Express branded Sally the "Ramsay Street fitness fanatic". [12] Coral O'Connor of the Daily Mirror branded her "saucy Sally" and a "mysterious redhead". [4]

The older members of the cast eventually helped him feel more comfortable. He made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 3 October 1994, as he arrives on Ramsay Street with his parents and siblings. An early storyline for Malcolm was a romance with Danni Stark, to whom he lost his virginity. Other storylines explored a friendship with Stonefish Rebecchi, a career as a handyman and later, coffee chain salesman, and marriage to Catherine O'Brien. The character's departure aired on 11 March 1997. McNair made two brief returns in 2002 and 2004, and a year later he reprised his role for the show's 20th anniversary. In July 2011, Malcolm returns to help his parents with their marriage and has a brief affair with Jade Mitchell. Henry Ramsay is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Craig McLachlan. He made his first screen appearance on 19 February 1987. Henry is the only son of Fred and Madge Mitchell and brother to Charlene and Sam Cole. Henry was known as a joker and was always coming up with schemes to make money. Henry dated Sue Parker and Melanie Pearson before beginning a relationship with Bronwyn Davies. He later moved to New Zealand to be a Disc jockey and married Bronwyn. He departed on 23 November 1989. McLachlan won three Logie Awards for his role as Henry during his time with Neighbours.

Jane Harris (<i>Neighbours</i>) Fictional character in the Australian Network Ten soap opera Neighbours

Jane Harris is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Annie Jones. She was created by writer Ray Kolle and debuted during the episode broadcast on 31 July 1986. Jones originally auditioned for the role of Charlene Mitchell, but she was not successful. This prompted Jones to telephone the producers for two months asking for a role in the show until eventually she was cast. In 1989, Jones decided to quit the serial in order to pursue other projects and the character departed on 9 September the same year. In 2005, Jones was one of many ex-cast members who agreed to return to the serial to mark the 20th anniversary of Neighbours. On-screen she was featured making a cameo in Annalise Hartman's documentary about Ramsay Street. Jones reprised the role again in 2018 for two guest stints starting on 6 April and 26 November 2018. She returned on 10 February 2020 as part of the serial's 35th anniversary celebrations, before returning to the regular cast from 8 July 2020. Her final appearance aired on 28 July 2022 in the Neighbours finale. She will reprise the role as part of the series' continuation, via Amazon Freevee, in 2023.

Des Clarke is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Paul Keane. Des was created by Reg Watson as one of Neighbours' twelve original characters. He made his first on screen appearance on 18 March 1985, the show's first episode. Des departed during the episode broadcast on 11 October 1990. Keane later reprised the role as part of Neighbours' 30th anniversary celebrations in March 2015. He also returned for the 35th anniversary on 18 March 2020, again in August and December 2020 and for the serial's final episodes in 2022.

Jamie Clarke is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours. The character was originally played by S.J. Dey from the character's birth and introduction on 30 July 1987. Ryder Susman briefly took over the role in 1989, as it was becoming more obvious that Dey was a girl. Dey returned to the role, but later in 1989, brothers Nicholas and James Mason took over the role of Jamie until the character departed in 1990. In 2003, the character returned, this time played by Angus McLaren.

The producer had originally wanted Rebecca Gibney to play the role, but she joined the cast of another television series. When Smith came in to audition for a guest part, her appearance, particularly her short haircut, caught the attention of the casting director, who had been looking for an "outrageous image" for the character of Daphne. Smith won the role and she made her on-screen debut in the soap's first episode, which was broadcast on 18 March 1985.

Mike Young is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, played by Guy Pearce. Pearce was in his final year at school and only had amateur theatre experience when he auditioned for the role. After winning the part of Mike, Pearce soon relocated to Melbourne and began filming in December 1985. He made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 20 January 1986. Mike's arrival was part of an attempt to give the serial a youthful look. He was given immediate links to the other character through a friendship with Scott Robinson, who helps him secure work at the local coffee shop.

His storylines included training to be an Olympic swimmer and being involved in two car crashes, with the second killing Jean Richards, leaving Shane facing manslaughter charges. Writers also created a relationship story with Daphne Lawrence. O'Brien decided to leave Neighbours in 1986 and Shane departed during the episode broadcast on 3 March 1987. O'Brien reprised the role in July 2022 for the show's final episodes.

Joanna Evans is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Emma Harrison. Joanna was introduced as the younger half-sister of established character, Annalise Hartman. She made her first on screen appearance on 26 May 1995. Following Davies' departure from Neighbours in 1996, rumours began that Harrison's character would be written out of the show. However, the actress signed a new long-term contract with Neighbours a few months later. In February 1997, producers decided to write Joanna out of the show. A reporter for the Daily Mirror said Harrison was written out due to rows with the producers over her poor acting. Joanna departed on screen on 15 April 1997. In 2005, Harrison was invited to return to Neighbours for the 20th anniversary episode, but she did not appear.

The Kennedy family are a fictional family from the Australian soap opera Neighbours. They have been a large part of the show since 1994, when the five-strong family moved into Ramsay Street. Both Karl Kennedy and his wife Susan celebrated 20 years on the show in 2014, and are stalwarts of the fictional Erinsborough community, with Karl serving as the area's doctor and Susan as principal of Erinsborough High. They have earned multiple award nominations for their roles. The Kennedy family has expanded to introduce several others since its conception, although plays a relatively minor role as of 2014, with Karl and Susan as the only members of their family still residing in Ramsay Street.
