Samantha Mogwe is a Botswana musician. Her music is a fusion of R&B, Jazz and African. [1]

Early life and education

Mogwe was born in Botswana to a Zambian mother and a Motswana father. [2] [3]

She has a degree in Theology from Baptist Theological College in Rustenburg and also studied music at Trinity College London. [4] [5]

Career

Mogwe started her music from an early age, her first performance was with My African Dream in 2003. In 2004 she became the winner of Gabz Karioke Idols and in 2008 she was the only representative for Botswana at Idols East Africa , making it to the top 24. [4] She released her first album dubbed Transition in 2015. [4] In 2018 she released a new single called "Secrets". [6] In 2021 she released visuals for the song "Beautiful". [7] In 2022 August she released a single called "Oxygen" [8] and in November she released the EP titled VII. [9]

In June and July 2022, Mogwe made Botswana's top ten most played songs list. [10] For the 12th Edition of BOMU Awards Samantha have been nominated for the Best R&B, Best music video, best collaboration, best female artistand best song of the year (Marang). [11] On 16th of December 2023 Bomu Awards held its 12th Edition at Roya Aria Stadium in Tlokweng and Samantha walked away with two awards being the best collaboration with Mpho Sebina for the song Marang and best R&B for the album VII. [12]

Personal life

Mogwe is married with two children. [4] She is noted to be private about her life. [13]

The Voice is a print and online newspaper based in Botswana founded by Beata Kasale and Don Laurence Moore. The Voice was founded in Francistown in 1993 as The Francistowner Extra; in 1999 it opened offices in the national capital, Gaborone. It has adopted a tabloid format which means shorter stories, bigger pictures and bolder headlines. The overall newspaper style encouraged journalist to develop a creative writing identity. Readership is at 30,000 copies per edition containing mostly human interest stories.

Game Goabaone Bantsi, better known by his stage name Zeus, is a Motswana hip-hop artist, MC and businessman. Zeus released his debut album Freshly Baked in 2008 which included the hits "Back in the days" and "Gijima". The album was generally well received and garnered him a Channel O Music Video award nomination and win in the Best Hip Hop video for the aforementioned "Gijima". His sophomore offering, 2009's The Flipside has been positively reviewed in both his home country as well as neighbouring South Africa. In 2010, he was ranked seventh in a list of the Top 15 South African Rappers and 4th on MNET's Top 10 African Rappers for 2010 compilation. Zeus currently splits his time between Gaborone, which is his hometown, and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Sarona Motlhagodi, known professionally as Sasa Klaas, was a Botswana singer, rapper, and songwriter. She was born on 17 May 1993 in Botswana and raised by her single mother Anna Mokgethi, a Botswanan politician. She was an all-round musician mostly known for hip-hop. She made her debut with her hit single Mma Mongwato. She was in a relationship with Bakang Baxon Moitoi.

Ross Branch is a motorcycle racer from Botswana. He lives in Gaborone, Botswana and rode for the KTM Off-Road Racing Team until October 2018. He now races for the Hero MotorSports International Rally team. Branch is the first Dakar stage winner from Botswana, after taking the stage 2 victory at the Dakar Rally 2020. Ross Branch also made history for his country and continent, becoming the first Botswana to podium at the Dakar, as well as first African to podium in the Rally GP class, coming 2nd place overall in the 2024 Dakar Rally Motorcycles.

Serara Segarona Selelo-Mogwe, also known as Serara Kupe-Mogwe, was a pioneering nurse and academic in Botswana. After serving as the country's first black, female chief nursing officer, she became the first Motswana woman to earn a doctorate and become a professor.
