Shree Samarth Vyayam Mandir, a pioneer physical education institution located in Shivaji Park, in the heart of Mumbai, has worked in this field for the last 73 years. About 1200 children engage in activities each evening.
The institution concentrates on indigenous games as well as contemporary sports disciplines like Mallakhamb, Kho kho, Kabaddi, Yoga, Gymnastics, Wrestling, Bodybuilding, Weight lifting, Athletics, Basketball, Volleyball, Judo, Karate and exercises like Lezim, Dand-Baithak, Lathi, Lakdi and so forth.
A unique feature of this training setup is that most of the teachers render their services in an absolutely honorary capacity. The coaches, basically the past students of the Institution, are engaged in producing not only the champions but also the future teachers who will in turn carry on the tradition and keep the motto "for the cause of sports" alive.
The institution has so far produced more than 1000 National champions in different sport disciplines and about 20 of them have been conferred 'Shree Shiv Chhatrapati State Sports Award' by the government of India. Over 30 students of the institution have represented the country in different International sports event.
The institute conducts two Yoga Centres for adult men and women, runs a Govt.recognised D.Ed.course as well as a part-time unaided Certificate Course in Physical Education-D.P.E. A library on sports and allied publications is also a salient feature of this institute.

Gajanan Maharaj was an Indian Hindu guru, saint and mystic. His origins remain uncertain. But, his relatives are found in Karnataka. It believed that he hails from Devana halli, near Bangalore. His brother Narayana Maharaj is also a famous saint from Harihara in Karnataka. He first appeared at Shegaon, a village in Buldhana district, Maharashtra as a young man at age of 30 probably during 23 February 1878. He attained Sanjeevana Samadhi on September 8, 1910; which is thought to be a process of voluntary withdrawal from one's physical body. This date of his Samadhi is commemorated every year as part of the Shree Punyatithi Utsav. The date of his first appearance is considered an auspicious day and is celebrated as Prakat Din Sohla.
Shivaji Park, officially Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park, is a public park situated in Dadar, Mumbai. It is the largest park in the island city. Similar but bigger in size to Azad Maidan and August Kranti Maidan, it is of historical and cultural value because of the political and social gatherings it has witnessed, both in pre- and post-independence Mumbai. The 113,000 square metres of open space is renowned as having been a cradle of the game of cricket in India. The park has a variety of sports facilities including cricket nets, Tennis court, a Mallakhamba area and a football pitch amongst others.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) is the apex national sports body of India, established in 1982 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of Government of India for the development of sports in India. SAI has 2 Sports Academic institutions, 11 "SAI Regional Centres" (SRC), 14 "Centre of Excellence" (COE/COX), 56 "Sports Training Centres" (STC) and 20 Special Area Games (SAG). In addition, SAI also manages Netaji Subhash High Altitude Training Centre as well as 5 stadiums in the national capital of Delhi, such as Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Arena, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, SPM Swimming Pool Complex and Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range.

Pooja Surve is an Indian individual rhythmic gymnast. She represents India at international competitions. She competed at world championships, including at the 2009 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, Japan. In 2010, she was the only gymnast from India to be in the top 16 at the 2010 Commonwealth Games; she won Miss Exotic Performance award in World Cup Belarus 2010, becoming the first Indian to ever get this award; and she also participated in the 2010 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, held in Moscow.
