Sambas is a town and the regency seat of Sambas Regency (Kabupaten Sambas), on the island of Kalimantan. Sambas Regency is one of the regencies of West Kalimantan province in Indonesia.

History

In 1963, the new district named Sejangkung district was established from the northeastern portion of Sambas district. On 21 June 2001, Subah district was cut out from the southern part of Sambas. In 2004, Sebawi and Sajad districts were split off from the southeast and eastern portions of Sambas, respectively.

Geography

Sambas town is located on the south side of the Sambas River between 1°11'20" and 1°24'48" north latitude and between 109°09'16" and 109°26'23" east longitude. With an area of 246.66 square kilometres (95.24 sq mi), Sambas town area covers just under 4% of the area of Sambas Regency. [1] The town district had 57,300 inhabitants at the 2020 Census, [2] and increased to 59,000 at the official estimates for mid 2022. [3]

Sambas has a tropical rainforest climate (Af) with heavy to very heavy rainfall year-round.

Originally including a wider area of West Kalimantan, this Pontianak Regency was reduced on 4 October 1999 by the north-eastern districts being removed to form a new Landak Regency, and was further reduced on 17 July 2007 by its southern districts cut out to create a new Kubu Raya Regency.
