Harold Lee Washington was an American lawyer and politician who was the 51st Mayor of Chicago. Washington became the first African American to be elected as the city's mayor in April 1983. He served as mayor from April 29,1983,until his death on November 25,1987. Born in Chicago and raised in the Bronzeville neighborhood,Washington became involved in local 3rd Ward politics under Chicago Alderman and future Congressman Ralph Metcalfe after graduating from Roosevelt University and Northwestern University School of Law. Washington was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983,representing Illinois's first district. Washington had previously served in the Illinois State Senate and the Illinois House of Representatives from 1965 until 1976.
Takoma Park is a city in Montgomery County,Maryland,United States. It is a suburb of Washington,and part of the Washington metropolitan area. Founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1890,Takoma Park,informally called "Azalea City",is a Tree City USA and a nuclear-free zone. A planned commuter suburb,it is situated along the Metropolitan Branch of the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad,just northeast of Washington,D.C.,and it shares a border and history with the adjacent Washington,D.C. neighborhood of Takoma. It is governed by an elected mayor and six elected councilmembers,who form the city council,and an appointed city manager,under a council-manager style of government. The city's population was 17,629 at the 2020 census.
Patricia Reilly Giff was an American author and teacher born in Brooklyn,New York,United States. She was educated at Marymount Manhattan College,where she was awarded a B.A. degree,and St. John's University,where she earned an M.A. and Hofstra University,where she was awarded a Professional Diploma in Reading and a Doctorate of Humane Letters. After spending some twenty years as a full-time teacher,she began writing,specializing in children's literature. Giff resided in Trumbull,Connecticut,along with her husband Jim and their three children. Giff's writing workshops have influenced other children's authors such as Tony Abbott and Elise Broach. She was a Newbery Honor,ALA Best Book For Young Adults,and Christopher Award laureate.

State Route 56 (SR 56) is an east–west state highway in the U.S. state of California. It runs 9.210 miles (14.822 km) from Interstate 5 (I-5) in the Carmel Valley neighborhood of San Diego to I-15. The eastern terminus of the highway is also the western end of the Ted Williams Parkway. SR 56 serves as an important connector between I-5 and I-15,being the only east–west freeway between SR 78 in north San Diego County,several miles away,and SR 52 near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. It is also named the Ted Williams Freeway,after the San Diego-born baseball player.
David Duvall Orr is an American Democratic politician who served as the Cook County Clerk from 1990 to 2018. Orr previously served as alderman for the 49th ward in Chicago City Council from 1979 to 1990. He briefly served as acting Mayor of Chicago from November 25 to December 2,1987,following the death of Mayor Harold Washington. Orr retired from the office of Cook County Clerk in 2018,opting not to run for an eighth term.

Shepherd Park is a neighborhood in the northwest quadrant of Washington,D.C. In the years following World War II,restrictive covenants which had prevented Jews and African Americans from purchasing homes in the neighborhood were no longer enforced,and the neighborhood became largely Jewish and African American. Over the past 40 years,the Jewish population of the neighborhood has declined but the neighborhood has continued to support a thriving upper and middle class African American community. The Shepherd Park Citizens Association and Neighbors Inc. led efforts to stem white flight from the neighborhood in the 1960s and 1970s,and it has remained a continuously integrated neighborhood,with very active and inclusive civic groups.
Arthur Christ Agnos is an American politician. He served as the 39th mayor of San Francisco,California from 1988 to 1992 and as the Regional Head of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 2001.
Dorothy Jean Tillman is an American politician,civil rights activist and former Chicago,Illinois alderman. Tillman served as the alderman of the city's 3rd Ward from 1985 until 2007. A member of the Democratic Party,representing part of the city's South Side in the Chicago City Council. As an Alderman,Tillman was a strong advocate of reparations for slavery. In April 2007,Tillman was defeated in a runoff election by challenger Pat Dowell. Tillman defeated Dowell in 2003. Prior to her career as an alderman,Tillman was active in the Civil Rights Movement,working for Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) as an activist. Tillman was known for wearing large hats and has cultivated this image as her trademark.
Interstate 270 (I-270) is a 34.7-mile (55.8 km) auxiliary Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of Maryland that travels from I-495 just north of Bethesda in Montgomery County north to I-70 in the city of Frederick in Frederick County. It consists of the 32.6-mile (52.5 km) mainline as well as a 2.1-mile (3.4 km) spur that provides access to and from southbound I-495. I-270 is known as the Washington National Pike,and makes up the easternmost stretch of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway. Most of the southern part of the route in Montgomery County passes through suburban areas around Rockville and Gaithersburg that are home to many biotech firms. This portion of I-270 is up to 12 lanes wide and consists of a local–express lane configuration as well as high-occupancy vehicle lanes that are in operation during peak travel times. North of the Gaithersburg area,the road continues through the northern part of Montgomery County,passing Germantown and Clarksburg as a six- to eight-lane highway with an HOV lane in the northbound direction only. North of here,I-270 continues through rural areas into Frederick County and toward the city of Frederick as a four-lane freeway.

Freeway Park,officially known as Jim Ellis Freeway Park,is an urban park in Seattle,Washington,United States,connecting the city's downtown to the Washington State Convention Center and First Hill. The park sits atop a section of Interstate 5 and a large city-owned parking lot;8th Avenue also bridges over the park. An unusual mixture of brutalist architecture and greenery,the 5.2-acre (21,000 m2) park,designed by Lawrence Halprin's office under the supervision of Angela Danadjieva,opened to the public on July 4,1976,at a cost of $23.5 million. An expansion of the park that stretches several blocks up First Hill,including a stairway and wheelchair ramp,was opened in 1982.
U.S. Route 29 (US 29) enters Washington,D.C.,via the Key Bridge from Arlington,Virginia,and exits at Silver Spring,Maryland. It predominantly follows city surface streets,although the portion of the route from the Key Bridge east to 26th Street Northwest is an elevated highway. The elevated section of US 29 in DC is better known as the Whitehurst Freeway. Called the city's most ridiculed bridge in 1989,there have been several attempts to have the Whitehurst Freeway torn down but cost and other considerations have stopped these proposals from being acted on.
The Exhibition subdivision of Saskatoon,Saskatchewan,Canada,is located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and was developed between the two major World Wars. To the west is the Diefenbaker Management Area which boasts the Diefenbaker park and Pioneer Cemetery. The park includes a medium-sized hill which is used for tobogganing and snowboarding,and the park itself is a frequently-used venue for picnics and public events and performances. The Exhibition community is also known as Thornton,after a (now-demolished) public elementary school that formerly served the area and early in its history also went by the name Bellevue.
Benjamin Franklin Gilbert (1841–1907),an American real estate developer,was the founder of Takoma Park,Maryland,a suburb of Washington,D.C.,and the city's first mayor. Gilbert was born in De Ruyter,Madison County,New York.
The Chicago mayoral election of 1991 resulted in the re-election of incumbent Democrat Richard M. Daley to his first full-term. Daley had previously been elected to serve the remainder of Harold Washington's unexpired term in a special election held following Washington's death in office.
