San Marino has participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest four times since its debut in the 2013 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Sammarinese participant broadcaster in the contest is Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV). The country consecutively participated between 2013 and 2015, securing its best placing on its debut with a tenth place finish. Following a nine-year absence after the 2015 contest, SMRTV returned to the contest in 2024 in Madrid, Spain.

History

Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) is a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), thus eligible to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

SMRTV attempted to participate in the contest in 2011 in Yerevan, Armenia. However, the broadcaster withdrew after appearing on the official list of participants, citing a failure to find a suitable entrant. [1] On 25 October 2013, SMRTV confirmed that it would make its debut in the contest in 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine. [2] For its first appearance, SMRTV internally selected Michele Perniola to represent the country with "O-o-O Sole intorno a me", marking the first time since 2004 that the Italian language was on the stage of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. [3] Ultimately, Perniola finished in tenth position in a field of twelve countries, marking San Marino's first top ten result in a Eurovision event. [4] [5] SMRTV continued the internal selection process for the 2014 contest in Marsa, despite an initial delay in confirming participation. [6] On 26 September 2014, it was revealed that the Italian/Sammarinese girl band The Peppermints, would represent San Marino with the song "Breaking My Heart". [7] The group finished in fifteenth position in a field of sixteen with 21 points. [8] On 27 September 2015, SMRTV announced their third attempt for the 2015 contest in Sofia, Bulgaria. Initially, the broadcaster announced that it would organise a national selection entitled Vocine Nuove Castrocaro. [9] Ultimately, the selection was held privately and Kamilla Ismailova was selected to perform the song "Mirror". [10] Ismailova placed fourteenth in a field of seventeen entries with a total of 36 points, also placing ninth in the public televote. At the time, this marked San Marino's highest relative placing in a Eurovision event. [11] On 8 June 2016, SMRTV's head of delegation for the contest, Alessandro Capicchioni, welcomed the move of the junior event to a Sunday afternoon and revealed that the broadcaster would select a foreign representative for the 2016 contest should the country participate. [12] However, 0n 14 July 2016, SMRTV announced it would withdraw from the 2016 contest alongside Slovenia and Montenegro, with no reasons cited for the move. [13] San Marino remained absent for a further eight editions of the contest.

Despite initially confirming that the country would not return in 2024, [14] on 3 September 2024, San Marino appeared on the list of participating countries for the 2024 contest in Madrid, Spain. [15] [16] Idols SM were internally selected to represent the country, and were announced as the selected group on 11 September 2024 during the charity event Sogna ragazzo sogna, broadcast on San Marino RTV. [17] [18] "Come noi" was officially released as San Marino's entry on 5 October 2024. [19] The group placed last in a field of seventeen, scoring 47 points. [20] On 29 November 2024, SMRTV confirmed its participation in the 2025 contest. [21] [22]

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015 was the thirteenth edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, and took place, for the first time, in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian national broadcaster BNT was the host broadcaster for the event. The final took place on 21 November 2015 and was held at the Arena Armeec in Sofia. Poli Genova, a Bulgarian singer and former representative of Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, hosted the show. A total of seventeen countries participated, with Australia and Ireland making their debuts. Albania and Macedonia returned after being absent since the 2012 and 2013 contests, respectively. Croatia and Cyprus withdrew after returning in the 2014 edition, while Sweden withdrew for the first time since 2008.

The process, entitled 1in360, culminated in an 11-participant final with acts chosen from three wildcard selection processes and two 11-act showcase events. The winner of 1in360 was "Who We Are" performed by Jessika featuring Jenifer Brening. The 2018 entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was promoted through performances in London, Amsterdam, Madrid and Lisbon as well as a 10-week anti-bullying campaign to raise money for the Diana Award. San Marino performed fourth in the second semi-final, held on 10 May 2018, and placed 17th with 28 points, failing to qualify for the final.

San Marino participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Sammarinese broadcaster San Marino RTV (SMRTV) confirmed that a second season of 1in360 would not take place to select the entry. In January 2019, they announced that Serhat had been internally selected to represent the nation in the contest with the song "Say Na Na Na", co-written by himself and Mary Susan Applegate. Serhat had previously represented San Marino in 2016 but failed to qualify for the final. To promote the entry, a music video for the song was released and Serhat made appearances at Eurovision parties in Amsterdam and Madrid in the lead up to the contest. San Marino performed last (17th) in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held on 14 May 2019, and placed 8th, receiving 150 points. The entry qualified for the final held four days later, where the nation placed 19th with 77 points. This marked their best placing to this point and their second final qualification.

The Sammarinese broadcaster, San Marino RTV (SMRTV), organised a new national final concept entitled Una voce per San Marino to decide their representative. The event consisted of 299 emerging and nine established artists competing over a three month period from December 2021 through February 2022 for the opportunity to represent the nation at the contest. The winning entry "Stripper" was written by Lauro, Daniele Dezi, Daniele Mungai, Davide Petrella, Federico De Marinis, Francesco Viscovo, Gregorio Calculli, Marco Lanciotti, Matteo Ciceroni, Mattia Cutolo and Simon Pietro Manzari.

The event consisted of over 1,000 emerging and 32 established artists competing over a five-month period from October 2022 through February 2023 for the opportunity to represent the nation at the contest. The winning entry "Like an Animal" was written by Andrea Lazzeretti, Francesco Bini, Marco Sgaramella, and Tommaso Oliveri.
