History

The band was formed in 2024 after Alessandro Capicchioni, the Sammarinese head of delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest and the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, proposed Asia, Giorgia, Giulia and Vera Stefania to represent the country at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024. [1] They were announced as the Sammarinese entrants during the charity event Sogna ragazzo sogna ("Dream, child, dream") on 11 September. It was also revealed that the song " Come noi " was the one the group would sing at the contest, having been selected by a "popular jury", following a "small informal competition" during the event, over another song they had performed, "Poesia"; [2] [3] [4] both were written by Francesco Sancisi, Nicola Della Valle and Paolo Macina, [5] members of the band Miodio. [6] [7] [8] [9] "Come noi" was officially presented to the public on 5 October [10] [11] [12] [13] and released on 1 November. [14] [15] Given the reference to the K-pop boy band Stray Kids in the song, it has been speculated that the group's name, Idols SM, comes from a combination of the name of people working in the K-pop industry, "idols", and the abbreviation of San Marino, SM. [8]

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 took place at Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain, on 16 November 2024. Idols SM performed 13th, following Stay Tuned from the Netherlands and preceding Artem Kotenko from Ukraine. [16] They finished in seventeenth, last, place with 47 points, the nation's lowest placement ever in the contest. [17]

On 29 November 2024, the band members, except Giulia, accompanied by their parents and one of the authors of "Come noi", met with the Minister of Tourism of San Marino, Federico Pedini Amati, who thanked them for representing San Marino in the contest. [18] [19] [20]
