Sandesh Prabhudesai is a Goan journalist and the author of two books on Goa's politics.

Early and personal life

Prabhudesai's parents were freedom fighters. [1] He has been a vocal activist, right from his student days. He was active as a student leader of Progressive Students Union (PSU), Goa. [2] In the 1990s, he was part of the group that advocated for a free and fair Goa Right to Information Act (GRIA) of 1997. [3] He is married to author Prashanti Talpankar. [4]

Career

Prabhudesai started his career in 1987 reporting for daily and weekly publications in both Goa and India. He writes in Marathi and English. He has previously worked as editor-in-chief of Goa365 and Prudent Media TV channels in Goa. He is also the editor of goanews.com, a news website started by him in 1996. He also reports for BBC News. [5] Prabhudesai was also the editor of Sunaparant , Goa's only Konkani language newspaper. [6] [7] Prabhudesai is a part of the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) and is a judge for their journalism awards. [8]

At the 2013 edition of Goa Arts and Literature Festival, renowned poet Gulzar released three books written by Prabhudesai - Ghusamat (Marathi), Taalgadi (Konkani) and Clear Cut (English). [9] Clear Cut: Goa behind the Glamour is a collection of op-eds written by Prabhudesai, featuring articles written about subjects like the medium of instruction and the Archdiocese of Goa. [10]

His 2022 book, Ajeeb Goa's Gajab Politics, covers the political history of Goa. It was released on the 191st birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule. [11] The book describes how Goa's politics is not influenced by the usual factors such as caste and religion, but is usually dependent on the candidate. [12] His 2024 book, Double Engine: History of Goa Lok Sabha Elections, was released before the 2024 Indian general election and covers Goa's history at the Lok Sabha Elections. [13]

Awards

In 2022, Prabhudesai was awarded the Laxmidas Borkar Smruti Patrakarita Puraskar (transl.Laxmidas Borkar Memorial Journalism Award). [14]

Konkani in the Roman script, commonly known as Roman Konkani or Romi Konknni refers to the writing of the Konkani language in the Roman script. While Konkani is written in five different scripts altogether, Roman Konkani is widely used. Roman Konkani is known to be the oldest preserved and protected literary tradition beginning from the 16th century AD.

The Konkani language agitations were a series of protests and demonstrations in India, concerning the uncertain future of the Konkani language. They were held by Goans in the former union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu; then under the administration of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). The protests involved citizen journalism, student activism and political demonstrations. The civil unrest ceased when official status for Konkani in the Devnagari script was granted.

José Matanhy de Saldanha was an Indian social activist, journalist, former Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly and school teacher, who campaigned for Goan identity, values, and culture. He also served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Goa with portfolios of Tourism as well as Science and Environment.

Goa is a state on the southwestern coast of India within the Konkan region, geographically separated from the Deccan highlands by the Western Ghats. Isidore Dantas is an Indian writer, translator, Wikipedia editor, and lexicographer known for his work in the Konkani language and Konkani Wikipedia. Noted for his interest in Konkani films, he is best known for his book on Konkani cinema Konkani Cholchitram and for having co-authored an English-to-Konkani dictionary. He has authored five books, co-authored a dictionary, and translated two books.

Narayan Ramnath Mauzo, also known as Bhau, was an Indian language activist and businessman who was involved in the establishment of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) and served as its treasurer. He played a key role in the founding of the organization and was actively involved in supporting a Konkani medium school. Mauzo was an experienced participant in the Konkani movement.
