Prashanti Talpankar (born 29 April 1963) [1] is an Indian writer, translator, playwright, and actor. She is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize for her work in Konkani and is a cancer survivor.

Early life

Prashanti Talpankar grew up as a student leader and as a part of Goa's historic official language agitation. [2] [3] She has also been a part of Bailancho Saad, an organisation that works towards women's rights. Notably, she went on a hunger strike in 1989, protesting against the lack of action in a case of sexual assault. [4]

Career

Talpankar currently serves as an associate professor at Dnyanprassarak Mandal's College. [5]

Writing

Talpankar has been into writing since her college days. Her poems have previously featured on All India Radio, Panaji. She has also written few short stories. However, primarily she writes children's stories and translates literary works.[ citation needed ]

In 2006, she published a book based on primary survey of migrant labour called Shadows in the Dark: The status of the migrant working community in Goa. [6] In 2015, Talpankar released a Konkani translation of Shashi Deshpande's English book That Long Silence, titled as Dirgh Moun Te. [7] [8] This was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation in 2017. [9]

Talpankar has acted in many Konkani films. Some of her films include Aleesha (2004), [10] [11] Paltadacho Munis (2009), [12] Baga Beach (2013) [13] and Juze (2018). [14] [15] All of these films have won awards, at either the national or the international level. [16] [17]

Personal life

Talpankar is married to author and journalist Sandesh Prabhudesai. [18] Being a survivor of breast cancer, she now regularly talks about her cancer survival journey to spread awareness. [5] [19] [20]

Ravindra Kelekar was a noted Indian author who wrote primarily in the Konkani language, though he also wrote in Marathi and Hindi. A Gandhian activist, freedom fighter and a pioneer in the modern Konkani movement, he was a well known Konkani scholar, linguist, and creative thinker. Kelekar was a participant in the Indian freedom movement, Goa's liberation movement, and later the campaign against the merger of the newly formed Goa with Maharashtra. He played a key role in the founding of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, which lead the literary campaign for the recognition of Konkani as a full-fledged language, and its reinstatement as the state language of Goa. He authored nearly 100 books in the Konkani language, including Amchi Bhas Konkaneech, Shalent Konkani Kityak, Bahu-bhashik Bharatant Bhashenche Samajshastra and Himalayant, and also edited Jaag magazine for more than two decades.

<i>Paltadacho Munis</i> 2009 Indian film by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar

Paltadacho Munis or The Man Beyond the Bridge is an Indian film in Konkani directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar. Set in Goa, the film is about a recently widowed forest ranger in a dwindling forest, who strikes up an unlikely relationship with a woman he finds lost and alone in the woods. The film tries to destigmatise mental illness, often equated with being possessed by the devil in rural India.

Uday Laxmikant Bhembre is an Indian lawyer, Konkani writer and former member of the Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly. He is noted for his role as the editor of the Konkani daily, Sunaparant, and as a Konkani language activist. Bhembre is also widely known as the lyricist of the famed Goan Konkani language song Channeache Rati.

Madhavi Sardesai was an Indian academic and the editor of the Konkani literary journal "Jaag". She was also a scholar, publisher and writer who worked mainly in the Konkani language in Goa. She headed the Goa University's Konkani Department. She died on 22 December 2014 after a battle with cancer.

It was co-produced by people from India, France and Netherlands under the banner of Goa Film Bazaar, with some of the editing done in Paris.

<i>Amizade</i> 2018 Indian film in Konkani

Amizade (transl. Friendship) is a 2018 Indian Konkani-language action film written and directed by Aniket Arun Naik, and produced by Sachin Verlekar's Om Creative Film Works, in partnership with Bymistake Motion Pictures. It stars Konkani actors John D’Silva and Rajiv Hede and is the debut film of Siddhant Kanekar, Gaurav Pokle, Chetan Upadhay, Dhruv Sincro and Vaishnavi Pilankar. The film is about love and the journey of four good friends and their friendship. The film's trailer was launched at the Goa Marathi Film Festival in 2018, and its poster was released at the 48th International Film Festival of India by the then Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar. The film was released on 7 December 2018.

Shakuntala Bharne is an Indian vocalist, writer, poet and announcer at All India Radio. She is a writer and activist of the Konkani language agitation.

<i>Amori</i> (film) 2019 Konkani drama film

Amori is a 2019 Konkani drama film based on water conservation and a nexus between politicians and builders. The film is directed by Dinesh P. Bhonsle, written by R M Vardhan, and produced by Opus Gala. Schubert Cotta has composed the music. It stars Salil Naik, Sobita Kudtarkar, Mayur Mayekar, Prashanti Talpankar, Tanmay Kharpe, and Shaina Mirashi. In 2019, the film bagged the Best Konkani Film award in the feature film category, at 66th National Film Awards.

Sandesh Prabhudesai is a Goan journalist and the author of two books on Goa's politics.
