Santa Cruz District is one of five districts of the province Palpa in Peru. [1] A large Pre-Comlumbian archaeological site called the Lost City of Huayuri is located in the district.

Tourism

The Santa Cruz District is a common destination for hikers, interested in Punta Union (peak) and Cordillera Blanca. The hiking tracks offer an elevation of up to 4,760 meters above sea level. The majority of the trekking companies are located in Huaraz, one of the biggest towns in the Peruvian Andes. [2] The 4 and 5-day passing treks are in the Andes are considered one of the most beautiful in South America. [3]

Huaraz, founded as San Sebastián de Huaraz, is a city in Peru. It is the capital of the Ancash Region and the seat of government of Huaraz Province. The urban area's population is distributed over the districts of Huaraz and Independencia. The city is located in the middle of the Callejon de Huaylas Valley and on the right side of the river Santa. The city has an elevation of approximately 3050 metres above sea level. The built-up area covers 8 km2 and has a population of 120,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the central Peruvian Andes after the city of Huancayo. Huascarán National Park

Huascarán National Park is a Peruvian national park that comprises most of the mountain range known as Cordillera Blanca which is part of the central Andes, in the region of Ancash. The park covers an area of 340,000 ha and is managed by the Peruvian Network of Protected Natural Areas: SERNANP. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1985 by UNESCO, is also a well-known mountaineering spot and harbors a unique biodiversity with plant species such as the Queen of the Andes, trees of the genera Polylepis and Buddleja, and animals such as spectacled bears, condors, vicunas and tarucas.

Artesonraju

Artesonraju is a pyramidal mountain peak located near the city of Caraz in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range in the Peruvian Andes. Its summit has an elevation of 6,025 metres (19,767 ft). It is one of many prominent peaks located within the boundaries of Peru's Huascarán National Park. Artesonraju has two distinguished climbing routes. Due to their difficulties, Artesonraju is seldom successfully climbed in comparison to other well known mountains in the Cordillera Blanca. This mountain serves as the inspiration for the newer Paramount Pictures production logo.

Santa Cruz, Pucaraju,Pukaraju or Pico de Huaylas is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru; within Santa Cruz District, Huaylas Province, Ancash. It has a height of 6,259 metres (20,535 ft), although other maps cite a height of 6,241 metres (20,476 ft).

Tuco (mountain)

Tuco,Tuku,Tucu or Huanaco Punta is a mountain in the Andes in South America. Its summit is 5,479 m (17,976 ft)) high and it is one of the southernmost peaks in the snow-capped Cordillera Blanca in northwestern central Peru. Tuco is located in the Ancash Region, Bolognesi Province, Aquia District and in the Recuay Province, Catac District. It is situated northeast of Caullaraju, between Challhua in the west and Pastoruri in the east.

Sentilo

Sentilo is a 5,100-metre-high (16,700 ft) mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru. It is located in Ancash Region, Huaylas Province, Santa Cruz District. Sentilo lies at the Punta Unión pass, the highest point of the Santa Cruz valley, south of the mountains Rinrijirca and Pucajirca, southwest of Taulliraju, and northeast of mountains Artesonraju and Parón.

Caraz or Carás is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru, about 6,025 metres (19,767 ft) high. It is located in the Ancash Region, Huaylas Province, in the districts Caraz and Santa Cruz District. This peak is inside Huascarán National Park, most precisely southwest of Artesonraju, northwest of Pirámide, north of Lake Parón and south of Santa Cruz Creek.

Lake Ichiccocha or Lake Chica is a lake in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru located in Ancash Region, Huaylas Province, Santa Cruz District. It lies within Santa Cruz Creek, between the mountains Pomabamba to the north and Caraz to the south, southwest of the larger lake Jatuncocha.

Jatuncocha (Caraz)

Jatuncocha is a lake in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru located in the Ancash Region, Huaylas Province, Santa Cruz District. It is situated at a height of 3,886 m (12,749 ft) comprising an area of 0.486550 km2 (486,550 m2). Jatunccocha lies in the Santa Cruz gorge between the peaks of Quitaraju in the north and Caraz in the south, northeast of a smaller lake named Ichiccocha.

Quitaraju

Quitaraju or Kitaraju is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru, about 6,040 metres (19,816 ft) high. It is situated in the Ancash Region, Huaylas Province, Santa Cruz District. Quitaraju lies north of the Santa Cruz Creek and the lakes named Ichiccocha, Jatuncocha and Quitacocha, between Santa Cruz in the west and Alpamayo in the northeast.

Taullicocha (Ancash)

Taullicocha or Tawlliqucha is a lake in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru located in the Ancash Region, Huaylas Province, Santa Cruz District. It is situated at a height of 4,426 m (14,521 ft) comprising an area of 0.133766 km2 (133,766 m2). Taullicocha lies southeast of Pucajirca and southwest of Taulliraju.

Challhua

Challhua, Wiksu or Huicsu is a mountain in the southern Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru, about 5,487 m (18,002 ft) high. Challhua is located in the Ancash Region, Bolognesi Province, Aquia District and in the Recuay Province, Catac District. It is situated northeast of Caullaraju, west of Pastu Ruri and Tuco and south of Santun. One of the nearest places is the village of Wicso, located next to Callan creek, west of the mountain. This creek flows to the Pumapampa River, a right affluent of the Santa River.

Santa Cruz Norte is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru; within Santa Cruz District, Huaylas Province, Ancash. It has a height of 5,829 metres (19,124 ft).

Santa Cruz Chico

Santa Cruz Chico, is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru; within Santa Cruz District, Huaylas Province, Ancash. It has a height of 5,800 metres (19,029 ft).
