The city was founded on 25 July 1536 by the Spanish explorer Sebastián de Belalcázar.

From 17 March to 1 September, Colombia denied entry to those who were not Colombian citizens, permanent residents or diplomats, and as of 30 September, a negative PCR test result issued within 96 hours prior to departure is required to enter the country. Land and water borders remain closed until 1 November.

It premiered on El Trece in Argentina on 7 October 2008, followed by its debut on RCN Televisión in Colombia on 27 October 2008. The series was created by Juana Uribe and Adrián Suar for the respective television channels in Argentina and Colombia, and it stars Julián Román, and Segundo Cernadas as the title character's.
